Tripp, Sam, and Webb swapped a concerned look.

I went over to Rianne and sat down. “Sis, you cannot tell our uncles.” I didn’t think she would. She had issues with them too. Still, if they got wind of what I’d been through, they would flip out, and we couldn’t afford for them to get in the middle. Otherwise, I was afraid we would never see Jordyn again.

“Like I would,” she said. “Let’s find our sister.”

I couldn’t have agreed more.

“Layla, if you’re going to drink my blood to spark a vision, you’re probably going to need more than a handful of drops,” Sam said.

“Which means we need Dr. Vieira to monitor you,” Webb added. “Sam’s blood is potent, and you’re human. The side effects could be life-threatening if you drink too much at once.”

I was willing to try anything to save my sister, no matter the consequences.

SAM

The woman was flat-out fucking nuts, but I loved her thinking. I loved her bravado and was beginning to love everything about her, right down to her soul.

She sat in the bed in the infirmary with her legs kicked out. Her auburn hair framed her face and blended with the smattering of freckles that brought out her beauty even more. Her electric-blue eyes were bright beneath her long lashes, and her bottom lip was plumper than the top as she nibbled on it.

“Are you listening to their conversation?” she asked.

I gripped the footboard. “Yep. It’s not going well.”

Dr. Vieira, Webb, and Tripp were talking privately in Dr. Vieira’s office.

“Are you guys out of your minds?” Dr. Vieira said in a tone that bordered on a screech. “If Steven finds out about this, he’s going to sever your heads. I cannot give vampire blood to a human. The Council of Elders will take my license. Layla biting Sam was one thing. That was out of my control.”

“Damon.” Webb’s tone was placid. “There’s something much bigger at play here.”

“Yeah,” Doc said. “We could have a dead human on our hands. She passed out once from Sam’s blood, and that was from a few drops. Are you forgetting what the Mason blood can do?”

“Let’s all take a breather,” Tripp piped in.

Silence ensued for a beat.

“This is nuts,” Dr. Vieira said.

“We get it,” Tripp said calmly. “But it’s not just about getting Layla’s sister out alive. We also have Abbey to think about. We need to find Roman. We need to strike before he shows up here. We have a base full of people to consider too.”

“Who’s winning?” Layla’s sultry voice drew my attention back to her.

“No one yet. Are you sure you want to do this?” The thought that Layla could die from my blood stirred an anxious feeling in my gut. The last time I felt like that was when Jo had been on her deathbed. But Layla wasn’t my sister or even family.

“I have to do something, Sam. Maybe I shouldn’t have said anything and just took matters into my own hands. I’m sure you wouldn’t have protested.” She crossed one ankle over the other, smug and playful.

I waltzed up to the side of the bed, leaned in, and touched my nose to hers. “You’re dripping with lust, Layla.”

Her cheeks flushed. “So, what?”

I brushed my lips over hers. “You want to fuck me so bad, you can’t stand it.”

She stuck out her tits. “What we did was just a one-time thing.”

I snarled as my fangs lowered. “I told you, you’re mine, which means nothing between us is a one-time thing.”

She shivered. “You’re such a caveman.”
