He turned toward me during breakfast when the others were involved in their own conversation, and he asked, “What’s going on with you?”
“Long story. I’ll tell you next week,” I said by way of getting him off my back.
But I’m not sure it did get him off my back, and I’m not sure I’ll tell him next week, either.
I take the letter from Dennis and read the return address printed on the envelope, and I mumble a thank you before I head up to my penthouse.
I find Ainsley feeding Jack some pureed mangoes at the table, and I set the envelope down in front of her.
She glances at it, and then her eyes widen as she looks up at me.
“You open it,” I say.
“Me? Why me?” she asks.
“Because I can’t.”
She presses her lips together, and she nods. I already know what it says. Of course he’s mine. Just look at him.
But I need this confirmation anyway—at least according to my lawyer—so I wait for her to open it. I wander over to the windows as she wipes her hands on her shorts, and then I hear the rip of paper as she sticks her finger in the back and tears it open.
A few seconds that feel like hours later, her voice is quiet as she says, “He’s yours.”
I blow out a breath.
We both knew it, but this is confirmation. He’s mine.
And before I know what I’m doing, I’m rushing over to him, pulling him out of his high chair, and squeezing him tightly against my chest in a hug.
I’m hugging my son, and now that I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that he’s mine, I’m not going to let him go.
CHAPTER 18: Ainsley Bradley
Another Charity Event
Dex’s publicist wasn’t playing when he told Dex to attend more charity events. He got us last-minute tickets to yet another charity event this evening, and I know he’s not ready to announce to the world that he has a child just yet since he hasn’t even told his family, but it’s going to be hard after the news he got today.
He agreed to do this event because it benefits the local children’s hospital. Madison was able to babysit again, so we know Jack is in good hands.
Since this was last-minute, it’s not the night he’s going to get me drunk. It’s not the night we’re taking Jack somewhere for the night. The next one will be, though. It’s where we plan to make our debut as husband and wife, too.
I’m wearing another of the gowns Milton had sent up for me. So I kept them all, okay? Dex said I could. This one is a deep navy with a sparkly belt, and I freakingloveit. I’ll wear it again, and a few others, and the ones I won’t wear again are going in the donation pile. I can do good deeds and still dress the part of a football player’s wife.
Speaking of which, I’ve been informed that several other players’ wives will be in attendance tonight, and I’m excited to meet them.
“How are you feeling about the news you got today?”
He presses his lips together. “Better than I would have a couple weeks ago.”
Sometimes he’s so hard to read.
“Do you think you should start telling people?” I ask.
“I’ll tell my family when the time feels right. I don’t want him needlessly exposed to the media if he doesn’t need to be. Until we’re ready, it’s not anyone’s business but ours.” His tone is resolute, and honestly…it’s really freaking sexy.
We arrive at the event, and as he slips his hand into mine, I can’t help but think back to that kiss on our wedding day.
I can’t help but want him to kiss me again tonight.
