That didn’t mean his guts didn’t knot at the smallest possibility.Logic didn’t always take precedence over emotion.
“I never claimed I made sense.”
Xane patted his shoulder, and gave it a squeeze.“I’m glad you know that.”He wrapped his arms around Spook and gave him a tight hug.
“There’s more than one reason I’m holding back, Xane.”
“Hm.”Xane drew back a little to regard him.“She ought to know the truth beforehand.”
The statement earned him another tighter hug.“On that, I can’t disagree.Maybe if you’d gone for it when you first hooked up, but not at this stage. Now,” his lips twisted into a pout.“Probably best to get it all out.”
“What if she doesn’t want to, after…” Spook croaked around the thick lump that had suddenly formed in his throat. After all the running he’d done, he actually found the notion of losing her unbearable.
“Then she’s a bitch and she doesn’t deserve you.”Xane released him and took a step back.“Okay, I’m going to back off and stop nagging you.”He turned his palms straight up.“In your own time, Spook, though you probably want to consider sooner rather than later.”
Now with a little space in which to move, Spook levered himself off the wall.“It doesn’t help with the Ronnie matter,” he said.
Xane pulled out his shades and perched them on his aristocratic nose.“I think we might just have to grin and bear it.Although, we could get over there and see if we can offer him a few pointers for dealing with the vipers.”
They could. As could Ash, who was already on site.Still walking, and with Spook leaning into him to see the text as he typed, Xane fired off a message to that effect.
