I nodded, and the grin bloomed fully, turning into the most joyous expression I’d ever seen her wear.
I went around to her side and scooped her off her stool. “I’m staying,” I said again, this time low enough so only she could hear as I spun her around.
When I stopped, she kissed me soundly, clasping my face between her hands, holding me still as she nipped and sucked on my lips, as she delved her tongue into my mouth to tangle with mine.
“Berk, I gotta ask you something,” I said against her mouth when I reluctantly wrested my lips free.
“Anything.”
“You said you’d come with me if I got traded.” Her eyes met mine, those blue pools I wanted to dive into clearing, sobering, the elation from a moment ago disappearing like a storm cloud under the sun. “Did you mean that?”
“Yes.”
“You sure it wasn’t just a heat of the moment thing?”
“When have I ever said something I don’t mean in the heat of the moment?”
“Never…” I said slowly.
“You’re it for me, Brent,” she whispered. “If I had to follow you to Antarctica, I would.” She reached between us and threaded her fingers through mine. “I’d go anywhere to stay by your side.”
I gave her hand a squeeze, brushing my thumb over her ring finger. Bare, for now, but one day I’d put a rock the size of Texas on it to remind the world she was mine forever.
“I love you,” I said, pressing a kiss to the tip of her nose.
“And I you.”
“God, you guys are gross,” Nate said from behind me.
Honestly, I’d forgotten he was there, and I turned to him with a giant grin stretching my cheeks, a matching one on Berkley’s face.
“How about I take you two out to breakfast to celebrate?”
“If you’re buying, I’m in,” Nate said, rising from his seat. “But can I borrow some clothes?”
“Have you even slept?”
“No,” he groaned. “I came right from a twelve. I tried to get out of it, but Mom was…persistent.”
“I’m sorry, dude,” I told him. “I’ll drive, and afterward, you can crash in my guest room for a few hours.”
“I’ll take that offer,” Nate said, then narrowed his eyes on me and Berkley, where my arm was slung across her shoulders, hand dangling inches away from one of her breasts. “As long as you two don’t do any freaky shit while I’m here.”
Berkley and I shared a look, her mouth twitching, and I knew the memories of last night flowed through her mind as surely as they did my own.
“Don’t worry, Nate,” she said. “I’m all sexed out for the time being.”
With a pat on my chest, she stalked down the hall toward my room, leaving both of us staring after her, mouths agape.
“I think you met your match with that one,” Nate said when he recovered.
I smiled softly at my girl’s retreating back. “Did I ever.”
Dream On, Dixie
I’d been running nonstopsince the beginning of the year, and I was tired.
Actually, tireddidn’t even begin to cover what I was. What I desperately needed was a week of uninterrupted sleep and five more hours in the day, minimum, to stay on top of my homework and Bar studies.
