Our moment of bliss was short-lived when my phone vibrated in my back pocket. Pulling away from him, I remained close enough so that we could look down at my phone together.Whoever was calling, it wasn’t a number saved. Curious, I swiped to answer and put the phone on speaker.

“Hello.”

“Emerald,” Rashida whispered.

I should have known.

“What do you want?” I demanded, brows knitting together.

“I need your help. Please don’t hang up,” my mother pleaded.

“Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t?”

“I’ve been arrested! I need you!”

Lifting my eyes to Ivo’s, I watched him hike his brows curiously before scratching the back of his head.

“Arrested for what?” I prodded.

“Does it matter!” she hissed.

“It kind of does, Mother.” I tucked one arm over my chest and held the phone up with the other.

The heavy sigh from her side told me everything I needed to know. Thanks to therapy, I’d come far enough to know that there were simply things out of my control. I had to focus on what I could make happen. Rashida was a lost fucking cause. She’d washed her hands of me and Sapphire a long time ago. The only reason she was coming around now was because she thought she might gain something from us.

“What were you arrested for?” I asked.

“Listen, I know what you’re thinking . . . but . . . this is all a mistake!”

“Is it though?” I tested her. “Because I remember everything about that night. The rain. The smell of the storm when I pulled up and heard the gun go off. I ran inside and you were at the bottom of the stairs screaming, yelling, saying, ‘he’s lost his mind, Emerald. I tried to stop him.’ You smelled like liquor and gunpowder. I ignored it and ran upstairs. He was on the floor, blood was everywhere, and the gun was in his hand.” Closing my eyes had me revisiting that night like a ghost, every emotion, every sense placing me right back in that room where I found him.

“I . . . I didn’t . . .”

“You know what, I have a lot on my plate with rebuilding my life and taking care of your son, Rashida. So, you’re on your own. I hope you have a great public defender,” I taunted before hanging up.

“Damn, that’s cold.” Brick sparked his blunt and took a pull.

“You good?” Ivo’s arms wrapped around my waist.

“I will be.” I sloped forward and pecked his lips. “I’m gonna go finish unpacking.”

The night was slowly catching up to me, but now that I was home, the only thing I wanted was to slide up in Cambrie and pass out. Seeing that she was packed and ready to go gave a nigga PTSD. I’d been on the giving and receiving end of that in the past, but I wasn’t sure I’d be the same if it came from her. I decided to shower quickly so I could make sure she was good. I know she struggled with coming back here, but she needed to know that nothing I did was out of malice.

With Nadia here, it was awkward enough, but I wasn’t doing no faking for her either. I’d respect her as the mother of my children, but she wasn’t my woman and hadn’t been for a while. I didn’t owe her shit, not even an explanation. With my back to the shower door, I let the hot water wash over me, kind of waking me up. A cold breeze slid up my back like someone had stepped inside. My dick bricked almost instantly, hoping it was Cambrie. Instead, when I turned, I found Nadia after she’d dropped her robe. There was no denying she still had it like that and kept herself in shape, but I didn’t feel shit when I looked at her. Her seductive eyes wandered over me slowly before she licked her juicy lips.

“Hmm, nice to know some things don’t change.” She tilted her head. “I can help you out with that.”

“Nah. He good. We was just thinking about somebody else.” My answer left her face wilting in embarrassment before fire ignited behind her orbs.

“You didn’t used to be such an asshole,” she shot at me, snatching her robe from the floor and quickly pulling it back around her curves.

She tied that muhfucka closed angrily before flaring her nostrils and pulling her hair back up into a ponytail. I finished rinsing the soap off me, still facing her, dick swinging while rubbing my balls.

“Always been that. You used to think it was cute when I laying this pipe to you though.” I reached for my towel on the metal bar outside the shower door and stepped out.

I tied it around me just as the bathroom door swung open. I expected it to be one of the kids, because Rogue didn’t give a damn and would walk in on anybody. It was just my fucking luck that it was Cambrie of all people. Her oval-shaped brown eyes bounced from me to Nadia and back to me while her hand remained on the doorknob. Smug, my ex faced her, and I shook my head, just knowing she was about to be on some bullshit.
