“You think you’re going to get away with this?”
“I think I got a good fucking chance. I might not be all connected like you, but I have resources, and I know how to move undetected. I’ve gotten this far.” She gave a half-shrug. “Now get in the fucking car and sit tight. We got a bit of a drive ahead of us.” Leni waved the gun, forcing me to the passenger side and letting me in before she went to the driver’s seat.
I could have tried to pull a fast one and fight her, but the fact that she had a gun and was my sister left me hesitant. I was still naive enough to believe she wouldn’t hurt her own flesh and blood. Brick had been warning me for weeks that I was being too soft when it came to her. It’s why I didn’t hang around her at the house much. I didn’t like the tension she brought. Should have been my first red flag that her intentions weren’t good. Seeing Brick and all his family just left me craving something of myown. Something that just didn’t exist in my world, and I had to accept that.
I got settled in the passenger seat, and she shifted the car into drive before glancing over her shoulder to check oncoming traffic.
“Make sure you buckle up. I’ll stop and fill the tank up in the next town. Don’t try anything, Six. I don’t want to hurt you, but I will if it means my own survival.”
Just as those words left her lips, we both paused and side eyed one another. My cell phone was vibrating in my purse. Reaching inside the Marc Jacobs bag on the middle console, she fished out the iPhone and grinned at the display.
“Awww, the One. That’s cute. You program him as that in your phone?” She held it up in my face so that I could see Brick’s screen name flashing across the screen.
“No. He did that when he bought me the phone.”
“That’s cute,” Leni muttered sarcastically. She pushed the side button to stop it from vibrating.
“If I don’t answer, he’s just going to keep calling and texting, plus track my location.”
“I know. Such a sucker. You know, I actually like Brick. He’s a little extra, but, I mean, he is fine and rich. Not much to complain about there. I damn sure wouldn’t be having any doubts about fucking the shit out of him.”
“We aren’t even built the same.” I stared out my window and muttered.
“No, baby sister, that we are not. Clearly,” Leni cackled. “I would be pregnant and trying to get a ring at this point. You playing with your future.”
Seconds later, the phone went off again.
“Answer it. This time, tell him me and you decided to take a quick road trip and we’ll be back in the morning,” Leni instructed.
“He’s going to know I’m lying. His grandmother is throwing this party this weekend and there’s all these pre-party events before like brunch tomorrow and a stylist is coming over to get everyone together with dresses. It’s a whole big thing.”
“Welp, tell him it was an emergency and you’ll be back as soon as you can. Be convincing, or I leave you on the side of the road with holes in you,” Leni warned before swiping to pick up and put Brick on speaker.
“Six, the fuck you ignoring my calls for? What I tell you about that shit?”
“Sorry. I was loading the car up from our shopping trip and couldn’t get to it. I was going to call you as soon as we got settled. What’s up?”
“Where you at? I’m hungry and want to have a date with my girl.”
“Umm, I’m kind of in the middle of something with Leni. We gotta take a quick road trip for her.”
“A road trip?” Brick repeated, and I could practically see his face balling up on the other side of the phone with contempt. He was very selfish with me and rarely wanted to share his time. “For what? The fuck that hoe got you on?”
Cutting my eyes toward my sister, I saw the resentment on her face as he referred to her like only Brick could. The nigga didn’t have a filter, and he’d say the same shit he called you behind your back to your face. It was what I honestly had grown to love the most about him. I thought I was bad, but I’d definitely met my match in him, and he kept me on my toes.
“Watch your mouth, that is my sister.” I tried to sound as defensive as possible while looking at Leni focused on the road.
“Fuck outta here. I don’t trust her shady ass. Bitch be looking at me like she can see my dick through my pants.”
“Anyway. We should be back by morning. I’m just running her to her old place to grab some things so we can take it to her new place.”
“Yo, you blowing me with this. We had the whole weekend planned, mama.”
“I know,” I whined. “I’m sorry. I promise I will make it up to you.
“You damn right. I earned that shit. You sure you aight? You sound funny.”
Those words left Leni whipping her head in my direction and shooting me a warning glare. I knew if I told the truth, she’d be ready to push me out of the damn car.
