“Yes, but…. I love my life. The mountain, my animals. I can’t really see me anywhere else. Even our little town can get too loud for me at times.

“As much as I hated going to that school, I loved the learning, the library. But I never fit in. I don’t— I wouldn’t want to raise a child the same way. It wasn’t Mom’s fault. We just didn’t have the resources in the early days to spend a lot of time in town. Winters we’d get snowed in and couldn’t always afford to have the road plowed. When the sheriff found out he and Jaxon used to take turns helping us out. We didn’t get the truck until Mom met John. He also got us the ATV.”

Her head snuggled on my chest, I stroke her upper arm.

She’s had so little. Rugged environment, not many of the conveniences most of us take for granted. And isolation.

Yet she risked her life to save a stranger.

CHAPTER 12

Fawn

We lay there in companionable silence. His heart beats steady beneath where my head rests. I don’t know why I’m blabbering so much. I guess he’s just easy to talk to and I’m not looking in his eyes, seeing any disgust or revulsion. I remember telling kids at school that our water came from the stream, we used a cistern and Mom butchered our chickens. I thought it was normal, they were horrified that we were so backward.

I don’t feel any judgement from him. In fact, he’s understanding, knowledgeable. With him I feel a sense of companionship like never before. The way he volunteers to help, the way he just does things like the firewood, the fire, fixing the bathroom window. As if this is normal life for him too.

I feel his lips brush the top of my head, then he kisses my forehead. Excitement ripples through me as he shifts us so he’s lying along my side.

Leaning on his elbow, he cups his hand under my chin and gently raises my lips to his. His kiss is warm, gentle. He teases his tongue along the seam of my lips before seeking entrance. Taunting and teasing, I’m breathless when he retreats.

“Fawn, I want you. Will you let me make love to you?”

I push on his shoulder until he lies on his back, meeting my gaze in the glow from the fire. “Let’s do it together this time.”

I hand him the condom from the pillow and watch as he rolls it on his already swollen cock. Once he’s covered, he nudges my shoulder.

“I’m going to love on you a little first. Lie back, love. I need you to be ready.”

He kisses a path from my lips down my body. The gentle brush of his beard is titillating in its own way. My hands roam his warm back and hard shoulders luxuriating in his heat. Pausing, his warm lips tease my already hardened nipples, before trailing lower to my girly parts. Wedging his broad shoulders between my legs, his eyes locked on mine, as he deliberately licks a path from the start of my vulva to my clit. My hips thrust up like a divining rod seeking more.

“I love how responsive you are. How you taste.” He runs two fingers through my labia and licks my juices from his fingers. “Delicious. So perfect.”

Lifting his hips slightly, he positions himself at my entrance. Thick and long, he slides in me ever so slowly, letting me adjust. He fills me in the best way, making me feel whole. The look on his face shows me his pleasure at our union.

Pausing, he covers my lips with his, teasing, taunting, thrusting his tongue against mine in a promise of what’s to come.

“More, Spade. I’m ready.”

He chuckles lightly and starts to move.

Oh the way he fills me, supporting me with an arm under my back. One hand cups my shoulder as he drives into me. Deeper, stronger, longer with each stroke. Need overwhelms me and I reach higher and higher for that promised release, that union with another.

Slipping his hand between us he touches my nub. “Now, love. Now. Together.”

Pleasure ripples over me in tune with his own shudders. After we’ve both recovered, he leans on one elbow and looks down at me. “Never, Fawn. Never have I felt so whole.”

“Me either.”

Hours later I wake to a cold nose pressed to my cheek. I open my eyes to Marble’s ‘I have to go now’ gaze. Gently disengaging from my sleeping lover, I climb from bed and quickly dress.

Letting the dogs out I see the snow has stopped. The sun’s rays are glistening on the pristine drifts. Spade comes up behind me in the doorway, kissing my neck and wrapping his arms around my waist as we watch the dogs frolic in the snow.

“I checked my phone and had a signal. I sent Jax a message letting him know I was with you. He’s at his cabin. Once he’s helped with the twins, he’ll call.

“Should we split the chores? You want to use the truck and clear the yard, and I can handle the livestock or vice versa?” he asks.

“Or…” He lifts an eyebrow. “We could just pretend we’re still snowed in for a few more days. Leave the snow where it is, take care of the animals and spend the day in bed. I’ve got another four days at least before I’ll hear if I got the job and nowhere I want to be but here.”
