“What have you done?” His slur was getting worse and he noticed, his face contorting into an angry expression.

The sedative finally took full effect, and his body swung back as he slumped to the ground, his head smacking against the ground in a loud thunk. I walked up closer and stood above him as he lost consciousness, becoming limp and pliable to my will.

I’d injected him with enough sedative to knock him out long enough for me to move his body and get him ready.

I grabbed his phone from inside his suit pocket and typed out a quick text to Jaxon, sending him and Theo home. Gravel crunched beneath my heels as I walked to the edge of the water, my toes touching the lip of the concrete block.

Once the message was delivered, I threw the phone into the water, watching it slowly sink to the bottom.

I glanced down toward the dock, watching a vessel pull into the port. Bemes’s port wasn’t vast by any means, but it was big enough for suppliers to use.

Since my husband had every worker here sitting inside his pocket, it had been easy to ask them to turn their heads the other way tonight, keeping this section of the terminal empty.

I headed for a storage container next to one of the warehouses and grabbed a dark tarp from inside, bringing it back to where Victor’s body was splayed. I unfolded the tarp and hoisted his body on top, then kneeled beside his body to check his pulse.

I loomed over him for a second, watching for any movement, but when nothing happened, I folded the plastic over his body and reached down to remove my heels, then threw them on top of him.

I quickly surveyed the premises, making sure there was still no one around before I grabbed his body and dragged him through the rows, making my way to where his judgment awaited.

Let your trials begin, Victor Morales.

CHAPTER31

THEO

Iadjusted my suit, trying to ease the anger that had been racking my body since I left her alone on the balcony. I headed back to the main floor, where I assumed my previous position as the mayor’s voice flooded the room, announcing the last few items to be bid on. I kept my eyes on the French doors, waiting for her to follow behind shortly after and rejoin the guests.

When we’d walked in earlier, I’d been supposed to scan the throng of people, working my way through every evening gown and expensive suit, assessing for any threats, but my gaze kept landing back on her because no matter how packed a room was, she was always the one to capture my attention.

As soon as she’d left Victor’s side and made her way out of the main room, I’d seen the perfect opportunity to have a moment with her, to finally have her all to myself after days of not being able to.

I’d made sure Jaxon was covering Victor before I had taken after her. I’d walked around, trying to find the staircase that led to the secret balcony on the far corner of the property, knowing she would have known about it and needed a quiet space to escape since she’d never been a fan of loud and crowded rooms.

When I’d finally found its door and stepped outside, she’d been facing away, her lone figure leaning against the railing. I’d stopped a few feet away, letting my gaze rake down her body, finally taking the time to soak her in.

The breeze had played with the fabric of the black gown draping her body, ruffling the skirt and sending the fabric clinging to the mouthwatering outlines of her perfect body.

She was always exquisite, and this dress simply highlighted that even more.

The dimmed golden lights had gleamed against her warm, tanned skin, and her hair tied in a low bun, some of the curls escaping it, framed her face while others kissed the delicate slope of her neck.

I’d followed the groove of her bare spine down to where her dress swept right above the curve of her ass. My breath stuttered, my heart pounding fast.

Only one word came to mind.

Devastating.

Nothing could’ve stopped me from walking up to her, my fingers desperate to touch her. After all these years, I just wanted to finally claim her as mine. Fuck the consequences.

But then, she’d broken my heart. Again.

I racked my brain, trying to understand the sudden change in her demeanor. We seemed to be on the same page just a few days ago. But whoever I left on that balcony wasn’t my Sofia. Whoever that person was, she was a completely different person, one I didn’t recognize.

I never expected her to push me away, to fucking choose him over me. She hadn’t said those words exactly, but her silence was all the answer I needed.

Message received. Loud and fucking clear.

She’d been quiet and distant since we came back from the cabin, but I’d attributed it to the endless preparations that had been required for tonight’s event and her husband being clingier than usual.
