“What?” I ask, searching all around us for a sign of who it is, but it’s too dark to see anyone but Rhian.
“Taron,” he whispers. “He's been following us this entire time. I’m a little surprised you only noticed once he started making it obvious.”
“Taron’s following us? Why?” I ask, not sure what's happening right now. Was Rhian in on whatever this is? He must be, given how excited his scent is. Fuck, is this what he had planned? Inviting Taron to join us?
“I asked him for some help making tonight exciting,” Rhian admits, pulling me to a stop, and turning to face me fully. “I’m not the only one that wants to court you, Sable.”
Oh. Ooooh.
“So what do we do?” I whisper, biting my bottom lip as my scent sweetens in the air.
“I think he's hoping for a show. Should we give him one, baby?” Rhian nods toward a darkened side path off the main trail, waiting for my answer. It’s clearly not decorated, and because of how dark it is, I doubt anyone else is down there.
If I say yes, what happens next?
“What kind of show?” I whisper, my heart already racing as I think about all the possibilities.
“Run!” Taron snarls his alpha bark at us, sending my heart spiraling. Rhian tightens his hold on my hand and takes off running down the dark trail, tugging me with him.
I can feel how close Taron is to catching us. His steps pound the trail packed earth behind us, making me dizzy with fear and adrenaline. What will he do if he catches us? I think I can guess.
“If we make it to the tree before he can reach us, then you’re all mine, Sable,” Rhian shouts as we run as hard as we can into the darkness. I don’t have time to think, just run. If I were alone, this would be too terrifying. I’m not scared of the dark, but I am scared of the unknown. What happens when we reach the tree, and why does part of me want Taron to catch us before we get there?
Most importantly, which fucking tree? We’re surrounded by trees!
But I don’t ask, I just trust Rhian, and run like my life depends on it.
Warm fingers graze the back of my neck, and I let out an unholy scream, pushing myself to go faster. Rhian matches my pace, laughing like this is the most fun he’s ever had.
“Run little omegas…” Taron growls loudly in the darkness, and I’m so glad I wore these boots.
“Don’t let him catch us!” I yelp as I nearly trip over a tree root, thankful Rhian is holding my hand still. It’s so dark out here, and the little bit of moonlight peaking through the trees isn’t enough to see fucking anything. But just up ahead, maybe fifty feet or so, I see a tree with two lanterns hanging from its branches.
That’s got to be the tree, right? Fuck… All I know is I’m locked in on the tree, and I’m not slowing down.
Realistically, there's no way we should be able to outrun Taron. Is he letting us win? I pick up my pace, adrenaline skyrocketing in my veins at the idea he might grab me at thelast second. This is Rhian’s date, he deserves whatever prize is waiting for us at the end.
Rhian and I collide at the last moment, as he wraps me into his arms, and takes the brunt of the force of our bodies as we crash into the tree. I’m panting, gasping for air as I search all around us for any sign of Taron in the dim lantern light.
“You’re all mine, Sable. Taron gets to watch,” Rhian growls as he spins us until my back is against the tree trunk. The area is dimly lit by the lanterns and moonlight, giving me just enough to see him. Rhian looks fucking magnificent, his dirty blond hair tousled and skin glistening with sweat.
“Watch what, Rhian?” I ask as I wrap my arms around his neck and pull him hard against me, still panting heavily after that run. I’m not a runner, so that was a lot. His eyes darken, and his scent grows heavy with slick. Taron must be half feral with our scents combining, my own slick perfuming in the air as my thighs grow damp with my need.
“Watch me taste that intoxicating pussy, Sable.” He grins as he leans in and presses his lips to mine. Fuuuck, how am I supposed to say no to this man? Every reason we can’t be together fills my heart with doubt, and I’m desperate for reassurance.
“This is a bad idea,” I murmur against his lips, gasping when he bites my bottom lip with a disapproving growl. He releases the tender skin, and leans back to glare down at me.
“Because we’re both omegas?” Rhian drops to one knee before me, glancing up at me as he wraps a strong hand around my calf, lifting it to rest my heel on his bent knee. I watch him as he drags the zipper down, before tugging the boot off, and then does the same for my other foot. I don’t know how he makes such a simple thing so sexy, but he does.
“Maybe,” I swallow hard, hating the self-doubt that’s trying to ruin this moment.
“Is it a bad idea, or are you just trying to run away from our connection?” His voice is breathy, with a slight tremble that makes my heart ache.
“That's not… I’m not running, I’m just–”
“Scared, Pretty Girl?”
I can feel Taron watching us, even though I can’t see him, the intensity of his gaze lingers on my body. I know he’s listening. I know he thinks I ran from him. I broke his heart, and now he’s watching Rhian undress me slowly. I squeeze my eyes shut, dropping my head back against the rough bark of the old tree.
