Somehow she managed to pull back to gaze into his eyes. She could see he was sated and content, a rare expression, especially after these past few weeks.
“As much as I want to remain here, I also want to take a shower and put on a fresh uniform. And then I want to go and eat as much as I can before we see what Colonel Pfeiffer has on his mind.” Running her fingertips down his broad nose, she gazed lovingly at him. “And then I want to come back here and love you all over again.”
He returned the look, kissing her fingers when they touched his lips. “Before we do that, I must discuss with you what I had said earlier.”
The dark shadow of hurt threatened to swallow this moment of tenderness, but she shoved it away. “Go on.”
“When I said we had to go our separate ways...” He dropped his gaze for a second, then caught her eyes again. “I do not want that for us. Never. I was wrong. I cannot face a future without you beside me. What I told the colonel, that my people make no allowances for separation, that is the truth. And I think I can use that law to keep us together.”
This bit of information was new to her. She cocked an eyebrow at him. “How?”
“Even among those of us who are incarcerated for crimes, if they have a Confirmed partner, they are still allowed to meet with them. Be with them privately and intimately, if requested.” He took a deep breath. “When the Seneecian ship arrives, would you be willing to go with me back to Seneecia? It could be dangerous for the both of us, and I cannot promise we will find any happiness there. ”
She answered him by drawing her arms around his neck and fiercely hugging him. “I will go anywhere with you, Kyber, as long as we can remain together.”
“Even if it means you would no longer be able to pilot a ship?”
Closing her eyes, she clutched him more firmly. “Sometimes you have to make sacrifices for those you love,” she whispered.
A kiss dropped to her shoulder as his embrace tightened. He didn’t respond to her remark, but she would swear she felt something warm and wet slide down her neck.
