“Better tell whoever else is with you to get the fuck out of that truck,” G8 darkly ordered. “I hope you don’t think we’re stupid enough to believe you’re all alone, and that you were going to march back to whatever hole you emerged from with two newborn babies in your arms.”
“I have colleagues waiting for me.”
“You have squatherewhere it counts,” N8 threw back at him with disdain.
The man seemed to draw some courage from within, and he lifted his chin. “This is your last warning, Deputy Children.”
“Andthisisyourlast warning, asshole!” G8 shot back. “You haveno rightto be on this property! So unless you want us to hand you your scrawny ass, do an about-face and haul it out of here!”
“Not until we get what we came for,” a second voice said. A second man emerged from behind the truck and took a stance on the other side. He carried a gun in his right hand, and he made sure the rest of them noticed it.
“G8,” P8 softly murmured.
“I see it.”
“No. We got more company. Good company.”
Good company?
A car came into view and stopped behind the truck. G8 smiled to see the Gerrold County Sheriff Department logo on the driver’s side door. When Deputy MacDavis started to get out, he yelled, “Guy on the other side of the truck has a gun!”
MacDavis dropped into a crouch, using the door as a shield. G8 suspected he was calling for reinforcements, which P8 confirmed. He addressed the second stranger.
“You have less than five minutes before more deputies show up. You have three options. Drop the popgun in your hand and get the hell out of Dodge before they arrive. Or you can stay there and find yourself wearing steel bracelets as your limo driver hauls you away.”
“Man, I love it when you use movie references,” T8 snickered.
“You said we had three options!” the first man reminded him with a snicker. “What’s the third one?”
A gunshot rang out, throwing everyone off-kilter. The guy with the gun screamed in pain as his arm took a bullet, forcing him to drop the weapon. Deputy Sowels emerged from behind the main lodge, his service revolver still extended at arm’s length.
“There could be another person in the back of the truck!” G8 warned him.
“Vaughn! I got this one! You check!” Sowels called out.
MacDavis quickly moved around the other side of his car to approach the truck. Ricks turned to him. “It was just those two! I think they’re all armed!”
G8 acted instinctively, rushing over to where he’d seen the second man drop his gun. Dropping to the ground, he rolled and ended up on one knee to point the pistol at the first man.
“Hands up where we can see them!”
The guy complied, lacing his fingers together to place on top of his head. MacDavis quickly cuffed him before patting him down. The pistol was found in the waistband behind the man’s back, hidden from view by his t-shirt. For good measure, the deputy checked everywhere for anything additional. By the time he was finished, Sowels and his man had joined them.
Stepping off the porch, G8 went over to thank the men. “We don’t know who these guys are, but they were wanting the babies,” he informed MacDavis.
Ricks hurried over, his face red and covered with perspiration. “Thank you, thank you, thank you! That guy…” He pointed to the man MacDavis had ushered into his vehicle. “His car was stopped on the side of the road, and he flagged me down. I pulled over to see if I could help, and that’s when the other guy stuck a gun in my back. Told me to come here or they’d blow my brains out. I told them I was headed here anyway.” He indicated his truck. “I really am from Tibbaly, and I really was coming to bring you some stuff. I just never thought…”
G8 gave the all-clear signal to the others watching from the porch and turned back to Ricks. “We sincerely appreciate the gesture. Hey, guys! We need to unload what’s in the truck.”
Sowels hauled his guy up to the car. “Can you watch this dude while I go get my car where I parked it?”
“Have you checked him?”
“Yeah. He only had the pistol that G8 recovered.” Sowels grinned at G8. “Hey. That little tuck and roll was pretty impressive.”
“Thanks.”
“Where’d you learn to do that?”
