“Yes. She’s also aware that I’m nearby.”

“How about the babies?”

“If you’re thinking I’m connected mentally to her, I’m not. I just have a sense of her. It’s like when you’re alone in a room, and you get the feeling someone’s entered or maybe coming up behind you. It’s kind of like that. I can’t explain it more clearly, but that should give you an idea.”

“But once her two selves rejoin, they’re able to share experiences and memories of what happened to each of them when they were apart,” G8 explained.

“Well, that doesn’t do us a whole lot of good right now,” Conners griped. “Got any idea how we’re going to handle this?” he asked Biggs directly.

“I’m fresh out of ideas.” The sheriff referred to K8 and G8. More specifically to G8. “How about you?”

“I think the only way we might be able to get K8 Second and the infants back is by creating a diversion.”

“Yes!” K8 sat up straighter in her seat. The unfocused, semi-conscious expression was gone. “If we can keep their attention focused elsewhere, we can sneak up on them from another angle.”

“But we don’t know how many of them there are in there,” the sheriff countered.

G8 pointed out an obvious fact no one seemed to consider. “Mr. Shiner said the black Chevy was being driven by Dr. Farenthold.”

“What?” P8 yelled from the other car.

“That house.” K8 pointed to the one in question. “Mr. Shiner, who rents us the campground, also rented this place to Bill and Dorsey.”

“Are you fucking kidding me?” P8 exclaimed.

G8 broke in. “But we didn’t recognize the guys that were driving that same car and white van.”

“Then there could be as many as five people involved, if not more,” Ingrid surmised.

“Why don’t we call in for reinforcements?” Conners suggested.

Biggs nipped that idea in the bud. “If they spot a bunch of law enforcement heading their way, it just might cause a hostage situation. And I’m not about to put K8 and those babies at risk.”

“What if… What if just one of you goes up to the house, and I sneak in through a back way?” G8 offered.

Both sheriff and deputy turned to stare at him, and he had a sense of what they were thinking. “Well, didn’t you ask Sheriff Biggs if that place had been sold?” G8 directly asked the deputy. “What if you use that as an excuse to go check on the place? Maybe welcome them to the neighborhood?”

“Of course! Introduce yourself,” K8 added. “Be like a welcome mat. Let them know you’re here for them in case they ever need help.”

Biggs nodded. “That sounds like a good idea. What would you do in the meantime?”

“P8 and I can run up to the farmhouse and maybe find a way inside.”

“We can grab K8 and the babies, and haul ass back!” P8 concluded.

Both the sheriff and the deputy stared at them in what G8 perceived as disbelief. Biggs finally commented, “Guys, this isn’t a TV show or action flick. Stuff like what you propose doesn’t work in real life.”

“People like us don’t exist in real life, either,” P8 snapped.

“Regardless, it’s ludicrous.”

“How can you be so sure?” Ingrid challenged.

The sheriff glanced back at the farmhouse. “So you think you can cross that field in broad daylight and not be seen?”

“We’re damn fast runners,” P8 stated.

The man snorted.
