Melody and I sat in the backseat of Daniel’s SUV. The drive to MacKellar Theater was quick and full of speculation about what we were in for at the bachelorette party.
“Is Omar having a bachelor party?” I asked.
“Saturday night,” Daniel answered. “A bunch of the couples have kids, so Natalie and Omar split up the days so there were people available to watch the kids. Since Natalie wanted to go to the theater, the only option was a weeknight since they have public movies on the weekends.”
“That’s really thoughtful of them,” I said.
“You know how they are. They’re good people,” Melody said.
“The best. Proof is me sitting here after what happened.” I scowled at the thought of the article.
“We’re putting that all in the past and going to enjoy tonight.” Sofia leaned across the console as Daniel shifted into park. She gave him a kiss, one he pulled her back into after she tried to slip away.
Melody and I climbed out, leaving them to say goodbye alone. Melody looped her arm through mine and led the way to the door. A curtain was hung over the entrance on the inside, declaring that the theater was closed for a private party. Melody grinned widely.
“And so it begins,” she said as she opened the door.
I walked inside, the sound of voices meeting my ears through the thick curtains that blocked the view from the street. I pulled the curtain back and laughed.
There were penises everywhere. Inflatable ones hung from the ceiling. String lights decorated the walls. Everyone wore penis glasses and light-up necklaces. Natalie wore a giant penis hat with an arrow declaring her the bride-to-be.
“Oh. My. God,” Sofia said, appearing next to me. “This is the best thing ever.”
Melody grabbed my arm and pulled me into the chaos. “Let’s go find some penises.”
I snorted and let her drag me along.
“Hey! You’re here! Necklace?” Daisy offered each of us, draping light-up penis necklaces around our necks without waiting for a reply. The necklaces blinked slowly at us.
“Are they judging us?” Sofia asked.
“I was wondering the same thing!” Melody said.
“Right? You can speed them up by… pressing the buttons,” Daisy said.
“This is going to be so much fun,” Sofia said. Piper called her name from across the room, and Sofia walked away to hug her bestie.
“Natalie is going to be so excited to see you both. She’s already started drinking. What do you guys want?” Daisy snorted. “I started drinking with her. You have to get a penis glass.”
The candy counter was completely transformed. All the candy was removed, and in its place was a variety of penis-shaped decor. On top was a collection of penis candy and treats.
“It’s all filled with something,” Daisy said, barely containing her laughter. “Valentina is a true master.”
“Did I hear my name?” Valentina said. She was the baker at Cove Bakery, the best bakery for a hundred miles, if I had a vote. She was talented and creative, but this was next level.
“How in the world did you do all this?” Melody asked Valentina.
“It was so much fun. Brantley was not happy to be my taste-tester, but he got over it.” Valentina snickered.
“You had him eating penis candy, didn’t you?” Melody asked.
“Of course! I had to know if the flavors would hold up in the smaller sizes.” Valentina smirked.
“You’re so bad. Did he believe that lie?” Melody asked.
“He was rewarded for his sacrifice,” Valentina said with a wink.
“Nice.” Melody chuckled. “Which one is your favorite?”
