“Fuck. You matched with her? How do you know it’s her?”
“I figured it out.”
“And she knows it’s you?”
I shook my head. “I don’t think so.”
“You have to tell her.”
“No. Not yet.”
“You know it’s going to go badly if you keep it from her.”
“I’m willing to take that risk.”
“Are you? Because if she finds out you knew and lied to her about it for weeks, she might not forgive you for it.”
“It’ll be fine.”
“So you’re using that connection to find out more about her? Is that how you know she doesn’t want to get married?”
“No, she told me that in person.”
Andre snorted. “Sounds like you’re off to a great start with her.”
I chuckled. “Something like that.”
After a minute, Andre asked, “Why are you getting involved with Casey if you want different things?”
I exhaled a laugh. “Fuck if I know.”
Andre studied me carefully. “You ended things with Reegan because she didn’t want kids, right?”
“Yeah.”
“What’s different about Casey?”
“What do you mean?”
“I assume you and Reegan talked about kids or no kids long before she refused to move in with you. I know that was the final thing and made you realize you weren’t on the same page.”
“Yeah?”
“There was something that kept you together as long as you were.”
I scrubbed a hand down my face. “A lot of things, yeah.” I loved her was a big one, but at the end, that wasn’t enough. By the end, I was holding my breath. I told myself at the time it was hope, but what I was hoping for wasn’t what I thought I was hoping for. When Reegan refused to move in with me, I was relieved.
And I was an asshole for it.
“You are going to end up in the same place with Casey,” Andre said. “She doesn’t want more kids or to get married, so what’s different?”
I opened my mouth to tell him everything was different, but he was right. Nothing was different.
“I’m not trying to piss you off. If you like her, go for it, but I don’t want to see you hurt again.”
“I’ll be fine.”
“I know you will be, but I love you, man. You’re like a brother to me.”
