I smiled. Michelle was right. My parents always believed in me and never made me think that anything was out of reach. I knew that what I was doing was bold and did not come without risk, but I also knew that I would not be alone in this venture.
We turned on some music, and the rest of the evening we spent packing up all of my belongings. Although I felt a bit sad, I was mostly just excited for what was to come.

“Okay, Brenna. I think we got everything,” my dad said. “And even if we didn’t, there’s no more room on the truck!”
It was three days later, and my parents had just finished helping me load everything up. My dad had finished securing it all and putting it in the truck, while my mom and I were cleaning the walls and floors of my old room. Michelle and Alicia had helped us with everything, and the entire process went a lot faster than I imagined it would.
My dad looked around my old room. “Wow, it is amazing to think about how much you fit in this small space!”
I laughed. “Do you remember what you said the day I moved in?”
My dad shook his head, smirking. “I’m sure I said a lot, but I don’t know exactly what you’re referring to.”
I laughed as I thought back to that day. My dad had been supportive, but he also had made it clear that he was concerned about where he was moving his daughter. He understood that I wanted to live in New York, and he was going to do whatever he could to make that happen, but he couldn’t help but be nervous for me.
“You looked at the truck on that day and told me that there would be no way that we would be able to fit all of that stuff into this room!” I said, smiling.
My dad nodded. “You’re right! I did say that!”
My mom smiled and shook her head. “Alright, sweetie. I think we have everything taken care of in here. We should probably get on the road since we have such a long drive ahead of us.”
“How long is the drive?” Alicia asked.
“If we drive straight through without stopping, it will take us 42 hours,” I said.
“Are you serious?” Alicia said, her eyes wide.
“Yes,” I said. “But we’re not going to drive straight through. We are going to spread it out over five days and take a little bit of time to see some sights along the way.”
“I’m so excited for you,” Michelle said. “This is such an adventure! You have to keep us updated every step of the way.”
“Of course I will!” I said. “You’re going to get tired of hearing from me!”
“Not possible,” Michelle said.
My dad cleared his throat, and I knew it was time for me to say goodbye to my friends.
“Well,” I said, turning towards them and trying to keep myself from breaking down. “We could really draw this out with a lot of tears and long speeches, but let’s not do that. I will simply say that I love you both, I will be in touch, and please know that you will always have a place to stay in Southern California.”
We all hugged each other one last time, and then I went downstairs, climbed into the truck with my parents, and set out on my new adventure.
Chapter 6
Josh
I felt the sun shining down on my face and tried putting the pillow over my eyes so I could get more sleep, but I knew it was useless. There was no way I was going to go back to sleep.
I rolled over and looked at my alarm clock. It was Saturday morning, one of my only days to sleep in, yet here it was, 6 o’clock in the morning, and I was wide awake.
I listened to the quiet house, and I knew Rylan was sound asleep. He wouldn’t be up for at least another four hours. I stretched, took a deep breath, and then sat up.
Oh well,I thought. At least this will give me a head start on the waves.
I walked into the kitchen and started the coffee maker. During the week I had the coffee on a timer, but every Friday night I turned the timer off, hoping that I would sleep in. I hadn’t slept past 7 o’clock on a Saturday in years, but every Friday night, I still turned off the timer.
I walked over to the notepad we kept on the fridge and jotted a quick note:
