She laces her arms around my neck and her eyes glisten under a sheen of moisture. “Thank you for coming for me, Vlann. I’m so happy you’re alive.”

I smile down at her and place a kiss upon her forehead. Gods, if anything had happened to her…

I can’t complete the thought.

“Gregory employed a hacker,” I tell her as I set her in the passenger seat of the hovercar I’m borrowing from Trent. “I put tracking devices on his family’s hovercars and I was also tracking his wrist comm, to be certain he didn’t come anywhere near you, but the hacker he employed found the tracking signals and disrupted them, made it appear he was either at home or at his family’s shipping warehouse. The hacker also froze the security system in my home.” I fasten her seatbelt for her and brush a hand through her hair, looking her over once more for bruises or other wounds. Luckily, I don’t find any new ones.

“He employed a lot of shady people,” she says. “I always hated visiting the shipping warehouse. Most of the workers, especially those who hovered around him, gave me the creeps.”

I cup the side of her face with one hand, warmth filling me that she’s not hurt. The bruises will fade in a couple of rotations, and I plan to take her back to my mountain and help her feel safe again.

“Well, I employ my own hacker,” I confess. “I human man named Owen. He gets me information sometimes, often classified materials, and he discovered that my trackers had been misdirected. I am sorry I did not foresee this outcome, little human. I am sorry Gregory took you away and frightened you. I swear on the Gods I will never allow anything like this to happen to you again.” And I won’t. I’m going to strengthen our home’s security system and do everything in my power to ensure no one ever frightens my little human again. She’s my precious female, my heart.

“Vlann,” she says softly, “What happened isn’t your fault. Even given his record, neither one of us expected Gregory to do what he did. He surprised us both. But you’re alive, we’re both alive. Now, take me home. I only want to be with you.”

I lean further into the hovercar and hug her to my chest, then I close her door and walk around the vehicle to climb into the driver’s seat. We speed away from the cabin, leaving the flashing lights from the Enforcers’ hovercars behind.

She’s safe, I tell myself, after I keep repeatedly glancing at her during the drive to my residence. My sweet little human is safe and I’m taking her home.
