Those men weren’t good men. Taking innocent women for coin. Trying to hold her hostage so that her sister would fall in line. She refused to let that happen.

Both she and Daracha had finally found their happiness and no one, not even a Laird on a power trip, would take it from her.

She turned back forward on the horse.

Callum was waiting, so was the wedding she worked hard to prepare for, and she would be back in his arms if she rode hard.

That was where she longed to be, and she would never leave again.

CHAPTER9

CALLUM

Callum had a hard time sleeping. He hated not having Islay in his arms and tossed and turned until a knock sounded at his door.

He looked out the windows, noting the darkness outside, causing confusion to sweep through him, but he knew that if it wasn’t dire, they wouldn’t be at his door.

He stood, pulling on some trews, opening the door to reveal Egan on the other side was not something he expected.

“We have a problem Laird.”

Callum felt his brows draw together, “What?”

“The Lady of the keep was taken this night.”

Callum felt himself sway, “Islay was taken? When?”

Egan nodded, “Aye. Two men rode up to the keep, one snuck in, and took Islay from her chambers. My men were watching them, but after they took the lady, we didna wish ta get tae close. Those men looked as if they spook easily and we didna wish her ta be harmed.”

“Were they no’ able ta shoot them with bows?”

Egan shook his head, “I didna want ta have anyone miss and hurt the lady. No’ tha’ our men would hurt her, but we didna wish ta take the chance tha’ something could happen ta her. By the time I was notified, she was tae far and I didna wish ta have her harmed. I had Fraser follow behind them, but I told him he wasna ta get tae close so tha’ he didna spook them. We didna want them riding so hard tha’ they got ta far ahead, or hurt Islay.”

Callum nodded, “Good. Where are they now? Do ye ken?”

Egan said, “They are headed south. And they are riding hard, but they doona seem ta be going as fast as they would be. I ken they believe we doona watch yer keep. So they doona believe they are bein’ followed.”

Callum nodded, “Is my horse ready?”

“O’ course. I got him ready myself, and I have readied my best warriors and Culloden.”

Callum nodded again, “Good. I will get dressed, then we are gone.”

Egan nodded, “We will be waitin’.”

Callum got dressed faster than he ever had before. Pulling on his boots, a shirt, his dagger belt and getting his short sword, which was better for close fighting, and he walked out of his chambers, ready to kill the men who dared take his woman.

Egan, Culloden and the men were waiting, just like they said, all atop their horses and ready for battle.

Culloden had an angry look on his face, “I canna believe they tried ta take her.”

“They succeeded. But we will bury them before this night is through.”

Culloden nodded, and Callum swung his body up on his horse, and they rode out of the gates, ready to follow the men who stole Islay.

“Did ye find out how they got in the gates?”

Egan nodded, “One man entered the gates before they were shut for the night, and we didna realize he wasna with any of the lairds men until he took Islay. The other was watched and kenned exactly where ta wait so we didna see tha’ he was waitin’ for his friend. Someone must have told them exactly wha’ they needed ta ken so as no’ ta draw attention ta themselves. The man who took Islay went out through the western tunnels. I doona have a sentry there, and I will remedy tha’ come the morrow.”
