Ringing started in the next room again.

“Ugh!” She stormed across the room, threw open the doors, and yanked the phone off the receiver. “Hello?” She forced a sickly sweet tone from her lips.

“Sorry, wrong number.” A raspy woman’s voice came followed by a click.

Daisy sat the phone back down and turned to see Tom glaring at her. “Where’d you find this one?”

He shook his head. “Daisy.”

“Don’t get sloppy now, Tom. Not when everyone is watching. Doesn’t your daddy need everything to look pristine since he’s running again next term?”

Tom cleared his throat and looked past her to where Jordan was probably pretending she wasn’t paying any attention. “Now is not the time.”

“When is the time?” She shrugged. “While we’re at it, why do you get a life outside of this marriage and I don’t?”

“Don’t be silly.” He shook his head.

She stepped closer to him. “Of course, you wouldn’t admit it when other eyes and ears are present. Is it because I won’t have sex with you again? You shouldn’t be surprised. You blame me for everything. It’s such a shame, really, we could’ve been friends. Hell, if you’d have been,” she paused and gestured to him. “Something mimicking a friend, we could’ve even been friends with benefits in this stupid arrangement.”

“That’s enough.” His face grew red.

“No.” She took another step closer so they were a foot apart. “We were forced into this marriage. I did my part and clearly failed, as you so like to remind me constantly.” Her voice rose. “I’m practically locked in this house while you’re getting your dick wet by some tramp. Why don’t you just get her pregnant next time!”

Her head was flung to the side as warmth spread across her cheek. The sting was delayed. She didn’t think he had it in him. Not with eyes on them. This was the turning point. She had a witness this time and everything. Pretend to cry and leave.

It was simple.

“Stop being such a brat.” His eyes narrowed on her.

She shook her head then laughed. “Do whatever you want, Tom. Jordan and I are heading over to Nick’s. He invited me for dinner.” She lied.

“You were just at his place yesterday.” Tom argued.

“I think he has a crush on Jordan.” It wasn’t a lie. Daisy thought something was going on between them, or starting. She needed Tom to think she was expected at her cousin’s place. Then, if she didn’t show up, it would raise suspicion.

“When will you be back?”

“I don’t know.” She spun and walked away before calling over her shoulder. “Why don’t you go stay in the city for the night? Apparently, you’re needed by someone and we both know that someone isn’t me.”

“Daisy!”

She ignored him as she rushed out of the room and grabbed her purse. Jordan was quick to follow as they left the house and were out the door. Daisy wasn’t the best driver, but she was a fast one. She didn’t want to bother with a driver.

“I could’ve driven.” Jordan shook her head as she buckled up.

Daisy was peeling out of the large driveway and headed towards the road to get across the bay. “I couldn’t stay in that house a second longer.”

“How’s your face?”

Daisy sighed.

“Fine, we don’t have to talk about it. Where are we going?”

“Nick should be home.”

“Is he expecting us?”

Daisy laughed. “Send him a text. Don’t tell him what happened.”
