Jordan groaned. “Your makeup isn’t going to hide it. It was turning red when we left.” After twenty minutes of silence she cleared her throat. “You know, he’s probably home.”

“Nick? Of course.” Daisy turned into his driveway and gestured to his car.

Jordan laughed and pointed to the mansion next door. “You know that’s not who I was talking about.”

Daisy shook her head.

“Daisy, you can’t let Tom have all the fun. We’re in my car that’s parked at your cousin’s.”

“Jordan.” Daisy’s eyes grew as she turned to face her friend.

“You’ve been in that unhappy relationship from the moment it was forced upon you. I saw the way your eyes lit up last night at the party. You may have forced your face to look like you were bored, but your eyes told a different story. You forget babe, we’ve been friends for a long time. I was around when he was. I saw it then and I see it now.”

The girls stepped out of the car, closed the doors, then turned to face one another from over the hood. They both laughed and grinned.

“You’re a terrible influence.” Daisy raised a brow.

“And I apparently have a crush on your cousin.” Jordan smirked. “See you later, in the morning, whenever.” She spun and waved her hand in the air before approaching Nick’s porch.

Daisy turned to look at the lights that were on across Jay’s home. It was lit up as if a party were going, but it was quiet. What if he wasn’t even home? Her chest grew heated with every step she took closer. She practically paced in front of his front door before deciding if she should knock or not. What was she doing?

The door was thrown open, and she gasped.

“Daisy?” Jay’s eyes grew then he smiled. “What are you doing here?”

She turned, so her reddened cheek wouldn’t be in his direct line of sight. “You’re leaving? Sorry to just show up like this. I’ll leave.” She shook her head as she turned to walk down the steps.

“Come with me.” He softly gripped her arm. “If you want. Or we can stay here.”

“Where were you going?” She chewed the edge of her lip. The temptation to go with him anywhere was there. She couldn’t risk being seen with another man though; there’s no telling whatThe Familywould do.

“A boring party.” He laughed. “Were you visiting Nick?”

“I think my best friend has a crush on him, so I was going to leave them alone for a bit so sparks could fly.” Daisy shook her head. “I can just wait in the car.”

“No, come in.” He let go of her arm and opened the door.

“I don’t want to keep you.” The lie was more for herself than him.

As much as Daisy was confused, she also knew there wasn’t a face she wanted to see more than his. It had been years, but there was comfort there. Safety. Something she’d been missing in her marriage without realizing.

She took in a breath as she walked inside. Breathing in his familiar scent as she passed. He closed the door behind her and led her further inside, up the stairs and away from prying eyes.

CHAPTER SIX

JAY

He clenched his fists at his sides as she turned to face him in the study. All he could see was red as she attempted to hide the red side of her face. It looked fresh and it took everything in him not to demand what happened. He had the right to know, but she would only argue.

“Would you like a drink?” He shook his head and moved to the bar along the wall.

“Sure.”

“Moscato still your drink of choice?” He smirked over his shoulder.

Daisy laughed. “I’m guessing scotch is still yours, not that I ever understood. It’s so dry.”

He poured them both their drinks, then walked back across the room. Daisy had made herself comfortable on the couch facing the unlit fireplace. Her shoes were off and feet tucked under her. He was relieved she instantly felt at ease with him. This was her home too, she just didn’t know it yet.
