His fist clenched at his side even though he’d love to put them right through Tom Buchanan’s face. The time would come when he could seek revenge for Daisy. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the moment. Jay knew he had to play it smart.

“Get him to the party this weekend.” His brows pushed together as he looked at Nick.

The look of surprise on Nick’s face didn’t shock him. “I assume you have a plan.”

“Always have more than one plan in place, old sport.”

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

DAISY

Her fingers ran under the water before splashing some in her face. Anything to wake her up from this nightmare. How Jordan was even able to sneak her the pill was beyond her. She was sure her best friend was being watched carefully by The Family right now. If she lived a simple life, she probably would’ve vanished.

Fortunately, she comes from her own family of influence and is often in the public eye. Jordan knows the rules, she knows how this world works. It’s why she’s kept her mouth shut and just nodded along with what they said happened. It was only in a brief moment without eyes on them that her friend softened the look on her face and patted her hand to show she would always be there for her.

A sleight-of-hand Daisy hadn’t seen coming. She felt the pill between her fingers then yawned. Nothing to help swallow it down. A phantom of it stuck in her throat for the past hour before she excused herself to the bathroom. It was also where she had hidden her secret phone she’d received from Jay.

It didn’t surprise her that there were missed calls and messages. The bulk of them were from today though. Nick must have told him something. She couldn’t imagine what details he was able to get.

Daisy: Remember that time we snuck into the planetarium in the middle of the night.

Jay: Do you need me?

Daisy: I always think of you when I look at the stars.

Jay: Daisy.

Daisy: I’ll always need you, but I’m okay.

Jay: Say the word and I’ll take care of it.

Daisy knewJay was capable of more than he once was. Some of the names she’d overheard around him were the same she’d heard for years. He was getting more involved in a business she didn’t want any part in. It was dangerous and only reminded her of the real threat.

The Family.

She shouldn’t have let any of it happen. If they found out about him, it would be over. Not just the dream of happiness with him, but any happiness he could find in life. His life, like her freedom, would disappear. She needed to end things.

Daisy: We can’t do this anymore.

Jay: What are you talking about?

Daisy: Only in our dreams. In another life.

Jay: Daisy.

Daisy: Goodbye.

Jay: Don’t do this.

Daisy: Gatsby.

One word to change course. One word to halt everything.

Her hand shook slightly as she let the phone lock itself, then turned it off before standing on top of the toilet to put it back in the hiding spot. She used a nail file to twist the screws to get the vent secured in place.

Daisy would have to wait until later to safely get rid of it. She could never let anyone know. Even when he gave her the phone and told her she could use it to communicate with Jordan or Nick, she couldn’t do it. It was a part of Jay she didn’t want to share. Maybe because she always knew it couldn’t last.

Like a candle burning twice as bright before it goes out. She reached for her neck as she looked up at the bulbs above the sink. The feeling of his hands couldn’t help her. She could never feel the leather against her neck as she swallowed after he buckled the collar into place.
