“He’s gone.” A rough voice spoke on the other side. “Want me to continue to follow him or stay near the house?”

“Follow him.” It didn’t surprise him that Daisy’s husband left her home alone again. He was an unfaithful bastard. That was probably the only thing he approved of, him being with someone else.

The green light beckoned him as he stepped out the back, leaving the glass doors wide open as he focused on that light. He pocketed his phone and lit up his cigar as he reached the end of his dock. His eyes narrowed on the green glow. Jay could imagine what was going on in the house behind it.

Daisy was alone and left to her own vices. Her inner demons probably battling between being the simple housewife she would always struggle to be, or the brat who loved to push buttons.

She wasn’t the type to sit around and be the doting wife. She couldn’t put on the act when needed. He’d seen the newspapers. He could also see the look in her eyes, the rebellion that hid just beneath the surface and itched to push through. He’d put it off for long enough, waiting for her to stumble back into his life by chance.

Extra advertisements went directly to her email, trying to entice her. Endless parties every weekend across the bay at his house. Constant temptations sent her way to entice her to escape from the prison she was living in.

All of it, just on the other side of that green light.

Jay couldn’t outright invite her over, she didn’t even know he was on the other side yet. The fact that her cousin was his new neighbor was kismet. He’d been growing more impatient every day, but this move proved to him he was still in control.

It was a roundabout way he had planned, but he’d do anything for her. Jay was in a different place than before. He had the money, power, and influence that was necessary. He’d worked his way up to ensure he could provide the life Daisy deserved, even when she didn’t think she deserved the world. Even when she didn’t want it.

She hardly did.

He’d never forget the first time he saw her. She thought nobody was paying attention, as if she could simply hide. Her looks grabbed his attention first. He questioned if he was hallucinating; surely, she was a mirage. The girl was ethereal. As cliche as it sounded, he was certain she’d been an angel walking amongst them.

Then she opened her mouth and replied to her mother, some smart-aleck remark and he was hooked. He waited until she walked out of that store alone before bumping into her. He knew then; she was destined to be his.

The words were on the tip of her tongue as her eyes narrowed. He knew she wanted to tell him off, tell him to watch where he was going. As soon as her eyes locked on his, they softened. A playful smile crossed her smile, and she told him she should stop watching where she was going more often.

He couldn’t help but laugh. They were inseparable for the season following. A beautiful collection of weeks until his unit went on its next mission. He had to leave and told her to wait for him.

She hadn’t.

Now she was going to pay.

CHAPTER THREE

DAISY

The clouds were dark and ominous as she stared out the window. Water rolled down as the rain continued to pour. She considered rescheduling on Nick, but he made it seem that this meeting was a big deal. Of course, they hadn’t seen each other much over the past few days since he’d arrived in town.

Whatever business he was here for kept him busy. Jordan told her they’d had a date the day before, and she was thankful they were hitting it off. At the same time, her husband was just as absent. She would have enjoyed that part more if he didn’t have guards following her anytime she chose to leave the house unaccompanied.

When she told him she was going to Nick’s for lunch, he only insisted on her taking the driver. No extra security needed. If she knew it was going to be that easy, she’d have told her cousin to come sooner and plan on seeing her all too much.

As the car came to a stop, she could see Nick jogging towards her side of the car with an oversize umbrella in hand. He opened the door for her and stood up under the umbrella.

“Tell your driver to go far away and come back in an hour,” Nick instructed.

“So secretive,” she teased. She turned to face the driver. “Come back in an hour, Ferdie.” She walked with Nick under the umbrella as the car pulled away.

A taste of freedom.

The house was smaller than she expected for him. She wouldn’t admit it out loud, but she loved it. There was such a thing as too much house for a home, it was all she grew up knowing. Daisy knew this smaller house was meant for short stays, but she couldn’t help but daydream. Living in such close quarters with someone she actually cared about.

Now that was the dream.

As they rounded the corner, she continued to take in all the knickknacks and comfortable looking furniture. A knock sounded at the door, she didn’t think Nick was expecting anyone. Although, when Jordan told her how they’d constantly been texting, there was a chance it could be her very best friend.

That would be alright.

Daisy turned when she heard the second set of footsteps enter the house. Small squeaks along the wood floor. A hint of a gasp escaped her lips before she covered them. She moved her hand and nearly snorted out a laugh.
