“When did you find out where I lived?” Her eyes were focused across the lake.
“Before I bought this place.”
She gasped and turned to face him. Her chest rising and falling with a deep breath. “Why?”
“Why do you think?”
“It’s an arranged marriage.” She turned to look away again.
“I know.” His hand squeezed hers. “He’s cheating on you.”
It wasn’t how he wanted to tell her. He was waiting for the proof so he could show her.
“I know.”
“You do?” Was it part of the arrangement?
She nodded. “There hasn’t been a time he hasn’t been with someone else.” She laughed. “I suppose that’s how it goes. He gets to do whatever he wants, while I put on the act that everything is perfect.” Daisy turned to face Jay. “You promised you’d come back.”
“I did. You just didn’t wait long enough.” He closed the space between them. His hand moved to her chin and lifted it. “I fucking told you, Daisy. I promised I would come back, and I did.”
“We talked about it, Jay. I told you what my parents would do.” She argued.
“And I told you to fight them on it. I was going to take care of you. Did you even get my letter?”
“It’s too late now.” Her eyes looked away.
“Look at me,” he ordered. Her eyes snapped back on his. His grip on her chin softened before his hand moved across her jaw and then down to grip her neck. “You’re still mine.”
She melted into his grasp. “I’m married.” Her words said one thing, but her body was saying something else. “We should get back to the party.”
“It was all for you.” He gazed down at her then rested his forehead against hers. “Every fucking party, trying to get your attention from across this damn lake.”
“You can’t say stuff like that.”
“The fuck I can’t.” He growled as he bent down to capture her lips, then hesitated. His lips hovering over hers. “Tell me no. Tell me you don’t still belong to me.” She shook her head. “Tell me that if my fingers reach down to feel you, you won’t be wet.” She held her breath. “Tell me you stopped being mine a long time ago.” She gasped. He released her from his grip and took a step back. “That’s what I thought.”
She swayed slightly. “Jay.”
“What do you want, Daisy?”
Her mouth opened to say something, then closed. She shook her head. “I’m going to find Jordan and Nick.” She turned and walked off the dock and away from him.
It would be the last time he let her walk away. It wasn’t easy, but he needed to let her do it. Now that she knew how he felt, she needed to be the first to give in. After that, game over.
His phone buzzed in his pocket, pulling him from his thoughts. He looked down to see Wolfsheim calling. Of course, business. Jay was grateful for the distraction. After having Daisy be so close and yet so far away, he needed something to do. Something to keep his hands busy.
CHAPTER FIVE
DAISY
Ringing.
The fucking ringing hadn’t stopped all day. If it wasn’t the house phone, it was his cell phone. Even after he silenced his cell, it buzzed and vibrated. Alerts going off like clockwork. Most of the time he kept it behind closed doors, but not today.
Daisy wasn’t an idiot. She knew it was Tom’s mistress. The woman was clingy and demanded more of his attention than there were hours in the day. At this point, it was probably the longest relationship her husband had. It wasn’t like they had a romantic one. If he wasn’t careful, the news would catch wind and have a field day.
She swiped Jordan’s vape from her and took a long drag. Something she normally didn’t do, but she needed something to take the edge off.
