“Oh Tom, assorted samples are always good with a group who may have different tastes.” Jordan smiled. Different tastes indeed. When all but one at this table had very different tastes.
One of the bartenders made her way over a few minutes later. Jay couldn’t help but notice the way Tom looked at her. As if he wanted to be with her instead of his wife. As much as Jay found it irritating, it was just the kind of thing that proved to the whole table why the arrangement was mute. Jay squeezed Daisy’s thigh under the table before moving his hand back to the black napkin with the bar’s logo in gold.
She questioned astrological signs, favorite colors, and other categories that took zero thought from the one answering. Everyone answered around five questions except for Daisy. The bartender asked her nearly double, as if she couldn’t get a good read on her.
Jay wasn’t surprised. Daisy had been putting on an act for so long. It was one of the things he was looking forward to once she was his in every way. She wouldn’t have to put on an act for anyone.
After a couple of rounds of drinks, Daisy was leaning more towards Jay. It was the pull they had on one another. Tom was beginning to notice. And while Jay didn’t want to make a scene, he decided to put the next plan into motion in a crowded room. All six of them around this table had been in the papers more than once, people knew who they were. Now was the time for the public to see how they truly acted when faced with news.
“It’s time to tell him, Daisy.” Jay leaned in close to her ear.
“You think I’m an idiot” Tom looked between the pair of them. “I’ve seen the way the two of you look at each other.”
Daisy tensed up next to him and it had him on alert.
“She’d ending it with you.” Jay placed his hand on Daisy’s as he looked up at Tom.
Tom laughed. “You don’t know who you’re messing with. This has been an arrangement that has been going on since before you came around.”
“My heart has only beat for her for the last five years, so I assure you, you’re wrong.”
“Five years? This has been going on for five years?” Tom’s voice rose.
Eyes were definitely on them now.
“I can’t do this,” Daisy whispered.
“You might remember me, old sport.” Jay looked at Nick next. It was the phrase that said the plan was moving faster than planned. They were skipping steps and headed straight for the end.
“I thought you looked a little familiar. What a small world.” Nick replied as the bartender returned with their drinks.
The plan was supposed to take a week. Once all the steps were put into place. Tom’s attitude was what moved it up. Jay had learned a long time ago to plan for anything though.
“I can’t.” Daisy pleaded next to him. “The family.”
“She’ll never leave me for you,” Tom scoffed. “Not when we’re going to grow this family. Didn’t you tell him the news?”
Jay knew there was zero chance she was pregnant with Tom’s baby. Jordan had helped to make sure of it when Jay slipped the pill to Nick who carefully gave it to Jordan.
“This has surely been entertaining, but I think it’s best we all say our goodbyes now.” The drinks had barely been touched as Tom pulled his wallet out and threw a wad of cash on the table.
Daisy stood abruptly, nearly knocking the chair back as she walked out. Jordan followed her.
Jay kept his face calm even though he was ready to kill the man who was looking down on him. His revenge would come soon enough.
CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
DAISY
The city lights grew smaller in the rearview as her foot pressed heavily on the gas. Everything passed in a blur. She panicked. Daisy wanted to be with Jay more than anything, butThe Familywas still a threat.
“What was the plan?” She glanced at Jay next to her.
Jordan had followed her out of the bar initially, but Jay was quick to follow when she grabbed his keys from the valet. He’d been quiet the first half of the ride as she sped down the road. No sign of the others behind them.
“I can’t fucking do this, Jay.” Her eyes watered. “You don’t understand.”
“You can.” He spoke softly next to her.
