She melted into him before pushing him back. She shook her head. “I’m sorry, Tyler. It’s not real.” She escaped his arms and ran out of the room.

“Fuck!” He ran his hand down his face.

Why didn’t she believe it? Clearly she felt it. The pull.

Why was she running from fate?

CHAPTER SEVEN

ELLA

She screamed into her pillow then used the edge of the pillowcase to wipe her tears. This was so unfair. Why did she have to struggle with this? She wanted to finally feel part of something and now all she could think about was how truly alone she was. How could fate be so cruel? Her chest tightened and she curled up in pain. What did she do to deserve this curse? It physically hurt, running away from him.

The only thing that numbed part of the pain was knowing he wouldn’t feel this pain. Soon enough, his true mate would come along, then he would understand that this hadn’t been real. It was something like lust. Nothing more.

She hoped it wouldn’t take long for him. There was no telling how long it would actually take. She needed to keep her distance. Not only for herself, but for him. Maybe she could fake an illness and be forced to take online classes from her room.

If that didn’t work, she’d drop out. She would request permission to postpone her attendance. Her first year could be the year after he graduated.

“New plan.” She let out an unsteady breath, sat up, and rubbed her chest.

Ella would tell the Dean this evening before dinner. She stood from the bed, walked to her closet, and pulled out a suitcase. It was a horrible idea, but she had to do it. It only meant that her future was postponed. Surely, she could find something else to do for a few years. There had to be a way to fill the time. She’d always wanted to travel, now was the perfect opportunity. Real life experiences before college.

The perfect plan.

It could work.

It had to.

There wasn’t another choice now.

CHAPTER EIGHT

TYLER

He didn’t want to give her space, but she didn’t give him a choice. She’d been avoiding him all day. He hated it. The only thing that helped was knowing most of their classes would be together. She wouldn’t be able to avoid him forever.

Only today.

Even that had been too much for him. Now that he knew the truth, that she was his mate, he needed to see her. Everywhere he looked, he came up short. It was like she had her own hiding places in this castle, and he didn’t want her hiding from him.

Everyone he asked hadn’t seen her. Dinner came and he spent the entire time in the dining hall, waiting. She had to eat at some point, but she never came. He watched Robert and Leslie eat without Ella, their eyes flickered around too. Did they not know where she was?

If he could just get his eyes on her once more for the day, it would be enough.

That evening, his chest tightened and his wolf howled in pain.

Something.

Was.

Wrong.

CHAPTER NINE

ELLA

Her parents were furious. They paced the small hotel room she rented the night before. Her father remained silent as her mother made noises of disappointment.
