“I just, I don’t understand.” Her mother turned and crossed her pale arms, her long fingers tapping.

“I can’t be there.” She rubbed at her chest. “Why does it still hurt?” Ella tried to steady her breathing through the pain.

“What happened?” Her mother shook her head.

“It’s the curse.” She bent over and squeezed her eyes shut. “He won’t be hurting too, will he?” Fuck! Why did it feel so real?

“What are you talking about?” Her father broke his silence.

“The curse!” she screamed. Her eyes watered as she curled up on the small bed.

“What curse?” Ella didn’t have to look at her mother to know the woman was rolling her eyes.

“Ella, why do you feel like you’re in pain?” Her father’s voice grew closer. “What is going on?”

She looked up at him. “You said it would be a lie.” She shook her head. “But you didn’t say it would hurt like this.” She gasped for breath.

“I’ll call the doctor.” Her mother pulled her phone out of her pocket.

“No!” She shook. “No more doctors. No more specialists.” She cried. “I can’t handle this.” Her breath felt short, like there wasn’t enough oxygen in the room.

“I don’t understand what is happening right now?” Her mother groaned.

“You told me fate would lie,” Ella spoke through clenched teeth.

“What?” she gasped.

“When I was younger, growing up.” Ella shook her head. “You said fate would lie and that I wouldn’t have a true mate, because of the curse.”

“You found him?” Her father’s voice rose.

“What?” Now Ella was confused. “You said the curse, it would make fate lie.” She cried out. “You didn’t say it would hurt.” Every time she spoke, it felt as if the air were being sucked out of the room.

“The block,” her mother whispered.

“The what?” She sat up and glared at the woman.

“When you were younger, we couldn’t get you to focus. It’s not like there was a handout on what to do if your child was a hybrid. We had to make it up as we went along.” Her mother shook her head.

“Ella.” Her father spoke softly and sat next to her. “When you were younger, you were coming into your powers at the same time your animal was wanting to shift for the first time. You were struggling to choose which was going to happen first. It was like both sides of you were battling it out. So we had someone bind your wolf, slightly. Not enough to harm her, but so that your magic could sweep through first.”

“What?” She stood.

“You shifted an hour later after the magic was already revealed. We were assured that it wouldn’t cause you or your animal or abilities any harm.”

“Does this look like it’s not causing harm?” She squinted. “What about fate? You said I would never have a true mate!”

“That’s what the doctors told us. Honey, you have to remember that there isn’t anyone like you.” Her mother groaned. “They told us it was unlikely you would have a mate, possibly that both sides of you would reach for different people.”

“So, what if it had?” Ella couldn’t imagine herself being with more than one person, but that didn’t mean it was impossible. It wasn’t common, but it wasn’t unheard of for some in the supernatural community to have more than one mate, they made it work.

“We couldn’t have an Ever—” Her father stopped and ran his hand down his face.

“Couldn’t have an Ever be what? Be different?” She shook her head. “News flash, I’m a fucking hybrid!” She exhaled and filled her lungs. “Is that why my wolf doesn’t speak to me? Because of whatever you had done to me when I was younger? This is my life, you have no right to make life decisions for me.”

Her phone buzzed on the nightstand again, but she ignored it. It had been doing it all evening.

“What do you mean, she doesn’t speak to you?” Her father’s eyes grew.
