“Sure, when there’s something worth telling,” she teased.

“So it’s true, you’re an Ever?” A girl with wild brown curls approached them.

Ella smiled. “Hi, I’m Ella.” She held her hand out.

The girl grabbed her hand and shook it. “Leslie. I’m a fox shifter.”

“I’m a witch and wolf shifter.” Ella spoke when their hands dropped.

“You’re the hybrid!” Leslie gasped. “That is so cool. Being able to be an animal and do magic. Can you do magic while you’re in animal form?”

“Wait, are you the white fox?” Robert grinned.

“Yeah.” Leslie smiled.

“I saw you run this morning, stunning!” Robert took another drink from their bottle.

“Leslie.” She held her hand out to them. “You are so nice, we’re all destined to be friends, aren’t we?” Leslie grabbed one of the bottles. “Please, tell me this is…” she stopped.

“Robert, my pronouns are they/them and yes.” They chuckled.

“Cool.” Leslie clinked her bottle with both of theirs.

Ella did her best to stay with the flow of the conversation between the three of them as the evening grew dark and more bottles were passed around. Her attention was divided, wanting to get a better idea of everyone here. All twelve of the first class of Sunstone were partying it up at the falls.

She remembered the ones when she was younger and at Ethereal. She didn’t really mingle though. She watched them from her watchtower. This was new. Being on the ground and level with everyone. Talking and laughing and getting to be part of what would be inside jokes for years to come.

CHAPTER FOUR

TYLER

He’d always enjoyed the view of the sunset from the falls. The way the sky went through a ray of colors as the sun set into the water and mountains. From blue to its burning yellow and orange. It always made it look like the sky was on fire until purple took over and the darkness came. Before the dark engulfed them, a small bonfire and tiki torches appeared… in the most perfect places.

Like magic.

Tyler had been here multiple times over the years, but he’d never witnessed the glow of more than a small fire pit they would occasionally remember to bring. It was often lanterns and flashlights that helped them see when it grew dark.

He wasn’t the only one to notice, the others that had been here before could tell. They could all feel it, the magic that made the glows form around the clearing. Everything was placed so specifically, it had to be done from someone who knew the area well. Someone who had taken the time to map it out perfectly.

Tyler glanced at Ella, who quickly diverted her attention back to Robert and the girl with brown curly hair he hadn’t met yet. No time like the present to introduce himself to new classmates.

“Is everyone ready for classes to start?” He approached the group of them.

Ella narrowed her eyes and pursed her lips.

“I’ve always loved school, but being able to live in the Ever castle for a few years is something I never would have dreamed of before.” Robert grinned.

“Absolutely, and getting to know everyone.” The brown-haired girl spoke. “Hi, I’m Leslie.”

“Tyler.” He smiled and nodded.

His wolf kept his attention on Ella. Not that he could blame the beast, there’d always been something about her. Even before he met her. Some sort of weird wolf intuition had his animal perking up at even the thought of her, since the first time they heard about her.

“Ella.” He smirked.

“Tyler.” She put on a smile. “I’m excited for the start of something.” Her eyes twinkled with a sign of mischief.

What does that mean? His wolf narrowed its eyes then shook its head.
