“Okay.” Robert nodded. “I actually have already gotten the ball rolling to become a professor at Ethereal. I never would have imagined myself a teacher when I was younger, but I know it’s where I was meant to be.”

Ella smiled at them. “I don’t know about secrets, it seems the supernatural world knows all of mine.”

“They know you’re a hybrid, but surely there’s something about you that nobody else really knows. It doesn’t even have to be a huge secret. Just a little one, like a future plan.”

Ella chewed on her bottom lip and shook her head. “I don’t think it’s much of a secret, I haven’t shared it though. I plan on joining The Council and eventually becoming part of the Elder society on it. Sure, I’m a hybrid, but I don’t believe I’ll be the only one. I think, if anything, I’m proof that even our secret world is full of more than we could imagine.”

“You think there are more like you?” Leslie asked.

“It’s possible. There’s nothing special about me. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were other hybrids of some sort already out there. Some are probably living in secrecy because they didn’t know what to do. I think if I’d been born in another family, it would have been easy to keep that kind of a secret.” Ella sighed. “But, I’m an Ever. My family has long been connected with the councils and Ethereal.” She laughed. “And now Sunstone.”

“That makes sense.” Robert nodded.

Ella smiled. “Okay, let’s keep going. The path cuts off up ahead to some stairs.” She led them down the rest of the corridor, up the spiral staircase and to a hidden door behind one of the paintings in the East Wing. She peeked behind the painting to make sure the coast was clear before moving it open more for the three of them to step out. “This hallway has empty bedrooms. I’m sure they’ll be full next year.”

“So cool.” Leslie stepped forward.

Ella turned right and walked down the hall. The others followed closely behind. She held her finger to her lips. “If they’re sleeping, this is where a few of the professors will be,” she whispered.

The others nodded and they stepped softly down the hall and towards another staircase. “I think you both probably know where you’re at now.” Ella smiled. “I’m not sure what rooms you were put in, mine is up here.”

“Mine is actually down those stairs and near that short hallway next to one of the studies.” Robert grinned. “It’s perfect since I want access to all of those books. Your family’s collection is huge.”

Ella smiled.

“My room is up the stairs too.” Leslie grinned.

Robert turned to make their way down the stairs as Ella and Leslie went up. At the top of the stairs and into a circular entrance, three more hallways appeared. Ella glanced at Leslie. “Where is your room?”

“This way.” Leslie turned to walk down the central hall.

“Cool, I’m this way.” Ella moved to the one on the right. “Night, I’ll see you at breakfast.”

Leslie nodded and left.

Ella watched her for a few seconds before turning around to step towards her own room. There were only three rooms down this hall and as much as she’d enjoy neighbors, she was hoping the other two were still empty.

She enjoyed the quiet. It didn’t occur to her before, that her life really had changed. Everyone was here. Strangers were living in her home. Sure, they wouldn’t be strangers for too much longer. She only hoped she really did become friends with some of them. Especially Leslie and Robert, there was something about both of them that she couldn’t quite put her finger on. They felt important.

Her magic told her so.

CHAPTER SIX

TYLER

Go after her,his wolf growled.

Tyler shot up from his bed, chest heaving. His feet hit the ground and heat rushed to his head as adrenaline filled his body. He glanced around then shook his head, taking a deep breath to calm his heart rate.

You should have gone after her last night, his wolf argued.

Tyler sighed. “Not that easy.” He shook his head.

Ella was putting up a wall again. It had to be different this time, she was allowing herself to get close to others, a little. He wouldn’t give up, but he knew he needed to approach this differently.

Tell her she’s our mate. His wolf sat back.

He knew the animal didn’t understand. “She didn’t want to hear it last night, she won’t believe it today if we try again.” He ran his hand through his short, dark hair. “We have to give her a little time and show her. We need to prove to her who we are.”
