“I’m saying I know every other shifter gets to communicate with their animals, and mine can’t. It’s like she’s barely there now. The few times I do shift, her voice is all mumbled. It’s like it’s been put through a filter and faint.”

“That’s not right.” He shook his head.

“No shit. So fix it. Whoever did whatever stupid magic they did. Make them take it back.” She watched as her parents looked at each other and disappointment crossed their features. “What now?”

“The witch who performed that spell, she’s not here anymore.” Her father closed his eyes.

“I assumed so, so go and get her. I don’t care if she’s in another world and you need a Keeper to find her.” She pointed to the door. “Just do it.”

“She died, Ella.” Her mother looked down.

“What?” Her voice fell before her ass hit the edge of the bed. “No.” She shook her head. “You don’t get to do things that permanently change me.”

What was she supposed to do now? She laid back down and watched as her phone lit up with another buzz. Her eyes closed as she ignored it.

Ignored her parents speaking in hushed tones.

Ignored.

What she wished she could do to the pain. Her hand went to her chest, her fingers brushing against her obsidian moon necklace.

TYLER

“What’s wrong with him?” The whispers started again.

He couldn’t open his eyes or talk. His energy had plummeted. He remembered feeling pain and then everything went dark. It was as if his body fell asleep, but his mind was still awake and present. He just couldn’t move his mouth.

“He’s been like this for a few hours.”

“There’s movement in the brain and his animal is near the surface.”

“So he’s stuck?”

“It reminds me of what happens when someone finds their mate and ignores them.”

“Has he found his?”

“If he did, he didn’t tell me.”

“There’s something happening between him and Ella.”

Ella, where is she?

“She’s not answering her phone. What if this is happening to her too? What if they’re fated?”

Of course they’re fated. He knew that already.

“Why would they ignore it?”

“She left.”

“Yeah, I went by her room earlier but she wasn’t there.”

“No, Miss Ever asked to un-enroll herself from school and start later. Something about traveling the world.”

“No, she wouldn’t do that. She has plans.”
