“If you say so,” Andrew laughs and turns his back to me.

Now, I really want to go back home. Maybe if I drown myself in a bottle of wine. I don’t necessarily want to be around Ethan or my cousin right now. Thankfully, there are a dozen others inside the house. I wouldn’t normally use them as a distraction, but I brought food that they’ve already been devouring. I take in a deep breath and let it out slowly, attempting to steady my nerves. I just need to keep my wits about me.

Easier said than done.

Chapter Seven

ETHAN

“Dude, you really need to get a manager to handle this shit.” Theo flips through the contract, brows drawn tight.

“I know.” I rub my eyes, already exhausted. “Just tell me if it’s decent.”

He doesn’t answer right away. My chest tightens while he reads. I’ve been trying to get a manager since Chad and I parted ways nearly five months ago. Theo has been helping field some of the contracts since he works for the Bobcat’s PR department, but he has his own responsibilities. I completely get it.

“It’s… fine,” he finally says. “Basic but straightforward. I don’t see any red flags if that’s what you’re wondering. Honestly, it’s the best I’ve seen come across for you.”

“Yeah?”

Theo nods. “Since you don’t have any sponsors, this is a good first one to have.” He leans back, crossing his arms. “What happened to those few people you were going to reach out to?”

“Dead ends.” I shrug. “It’s like a ghost town out there.”

“And your old manager?”

“I don’t think he actually talked to anyone about me. Honestly,” I lean forward to whisper, “I don’t think he fucking cares. He probably believed the articles more than me.”

Theo sighs, then shakes his head. “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but fine. One season, Ethan. I will help manage you while we clean up your image.”

Relief hits me like a puck to the chest—but in a good way.

“Seriously?” I straighten up, half-grinning. “Thank you! I promise you won’t regret this.”

He rolls his eyes as if he doesn’t believe me. I’llprove it with time. One day a time. One disaster at a time.

“Hey, bud!” Chase walks up to us. “They’re ready for us.”

Chase Smith is one of the other new players this season.

“Seriously, Theo.” I stand from the seat. “I appreciate it.”

He nods and shoos us away.

The franchise has organized a group interview showcasing the four newest players. I imagine Anthony and Ben are already waiting for us.

It’s been two weeks of nonstop practice, team bonding, and photo shoots. I don’t think I’ve ever had this many photoshoots in my life compared to since I joined this team. It’s got to be because of the new branding paired with being a new player.

As Chase and I walk down the hall, I notice fresh graphics and updated wall art lining the corridor. Between the modern updates of the building and the team’s new logo and color scheme, it truly feels like a different place. It’s bold and puts a smile on my face.

Up ahead, Anthony and Ben are chatting near one of the conference rooms and smile assoon as they see us approach. The four of us haven’t been officially announced, although the public has started to guess because of the teasers the franchise’s PR team has been putting out over the last week. The first game is a little over a week away. It’s fucking weird and not at all normal.

Veronica steps out of the room and notices us approaching. The smile grows on her face. “Great, you’re all here. Let’s get this started. This isn’t live, so we can take our time. There’s only a couple of people in here and it’s all through The Bobcats. The final edited version is going to be released on Friday, the day before the gala.” She pauses and looks us all over. “Which reminds me, Friday night is the gala to showcase the new changes. It’s a private party for our biggest sponsors. We expect everyone to be there and if you want to bring a plus one, they need to be vetted. Sunday afternoon is the kickoff party at the stadium for our season ticket holders. Everyone is expected so the fans can meet the team. It’s a three-hour event, but the meet the team portion is only going to take place during the first two hours. Everyone is welcome to stay for that third hour, but we’re going to be hosting some games for the kids and have some open ice time. It’s the first for us to allow the fans to skate on the ice.” Her eyes narrow. “We’re hoping most of you will want to stay and skate with kids. It’ll make for some good photo ops.”

We all nod in understanding.

“Great.” She clasps her hands together, then motions for us to enter the room. “Go and get this done.”

“Ethan,” she stops me from entering.
