Mom: You love me. Okay, we’re pulling up to the inn now. Love you sweetie. Let Ethan know he has permission to keep you company while I’m away.

Me: I’m closing this chat now.

Me: And I love you too

Me: Have fun and send pictures.

I moveto plug my phone in, then realize I’m over my head and have no idea what I’m doing. I need my best friend, who until recently lived on this ranch. My fingers move over the screen of my phone to find my cousin.

Me: How are you supposed to help me with my existential crisis in life if you aren’t around?!?!?!?!

Delilah: What are you going on about?

I didn’t thinkshe would reply so soon. So, I grab my coffee from the counter and move to the sunroom to continue the conversation.

Me: Didn’t you hear who was back in town…

I sitdown in the oversized wicker loveseat and curl up on the end closest to my bookshelf. It only reminds me of the last time I read and how I’m overdue for another trip to the bookstore soon. There’s one not too far from the rink. It would be the perfect excuse to just happen to be in the area while he’s at practice. I smile at myself. Then I second guess myself. Surely he’s tired of me now. He hasn’t left my side since Sunday.

But I miss him.

I groan as my phone buzzes in my hand.

Delilah: OMG! I was waiting for you to bring it up. Mom told me he was at the grands on Sunday…

Me: You didn’t know he was coming back did you?

Me: Andrew knew and didn’t tell me. I showed up to his house because he asked for some buns and stuff for team dinner. Please tell me you didn’t know. Because this is NOT the kind of secret wekeep.

Delilah: WTF

Delilah: What an asshole. If he thought I was an annoying little sister before, he’s going to hear a piece of my mind now. What happened?

Me: I was in the kitchen and didn’t realize he was there until he was literally RIGHT FREAKING THERE!!!

Delilah: And?

Me: What do you mean AND?

Delilah: What happened? Want to video chat?

Me: If you’re available, yes!

My phoneimmediately buzzed with her picture coming across the screen. I answer and see her red hair clipped back. It looks like she’s sitting in a car.

“Are you sure you’re not busy?”

She nods. “Yeah. I’m following behind thecrew. I needed to be away from all of them, so I volunteered to drive myself. I needed a little silence. We’re stopped right now, bathroom break.”

“Okay. So, I was at your brother’s and in the kitchen.”

“A normal place to find you, any kitchen.” She laughs.

“I can’t help that I like to cook and help out. Do you want to hear the story or not?” I try to hide my smile.

“Daisy Miles! Tell me everything.”

“Well, naturally, it’s a freaking surprise. Then he crowds me and I can’t move.” I groan. “We were alone, and he kissed me.”
