“I recommend having your lawyer look it over,” I continued. “Before signing.”
“No need,” he said, pulling out a pen and writing his name across the signature line. “Your union with my only child is exactly what we all need. I have every ounce of trust in you, Lorenzo. You’re a good man. Just like your father was.” He pushed the envelope back to me. “I’m in.”
I smiled. “Perfect.”
I grabbed the envelope and stuffed it into my pocket before getting to my feet. Vander Veer stood and moved around his desk. He wrapped his arms around me in a hug.
It took everything I had not to throw up, but I continued to smile and hugged him back.
“Welcome to the family… son,” he said.
I ground my teeth before pulling away. “Thank you.”
I pulled away and made to leave, but stopped at the door and turned back to him.
“Just so you know, I got Celeste pregnant. You’re going to be a grandfather. This letter will ensure your grandchild is well-cared for.”
“I-I’m going to be a papa?” His eyes widened.
“Yes. I’d like a fast wedding. Nothing big. We know what can happen at those.”
“Yes. Yes, of course. I’ll speak to Celeste immediately. You can marry by the end of the month.”
“Excellent.”
“Why not stay, Lorenzo. We can toast to our new family.”
I gave him a quick smile. “I can’t. I’m house hunting today for my new wife and child. Raincheck?”
“Absolutely. Raincheck.” He grinned like he’d just won the world.
I left him smiling like a fool and went back to my Escalade, where Cole was waiting in the driver’s seat.
“Is it done?” he asked tightly.
“It’s done.”
His bottom lip wobbled, but he didn’t say another word. Instead, he put the Escalade into drive.
The only place we could go was onward now and really fucking hope Rosalie would still love us by the end.
I wouldn’t blame her if she didn’t, but a vow was a vow, and I took those really fucking seriously.
FIFTY-NINE
ROSALIE
“Rosalie? Enzo said he wants to talk to you,” Jamie said, poking her head into my bedroom a few days after the situation in my closet with Cole.
“H-He does?” My heart jumped in my chest.
She nodded, and I got up to follow her downstairs. When we reached the bottom of the stairs, Enzo was waiting on the couch for me.
I darted my gaze to the doorway to see his suitcase.
“Enzo?” I came into the room, my fear amping up. I assumed Cole told him what I’d done. I’d been living in this giant ball of regret since that night with Sylar. I couldn’t seem to escape the spiraling thoughts.
He looked up at me, his eyes bloodshot, and patted the seat next to him. Jamie shot me a concerned look, but left the room.
