Geneva hurried into Travis’ room, not making eye contact with anyone.
“Nathan?” Abby said.
“It’s okay. I told her to go in,” he explained. “Let’s give them a few moments alone before we join them.”
A silence settled over them and then Nathan looked at Jillian. “How long do you have to stay in that boot?”
“A couple of weeks,” she said. “Overall, I’m lucky that no permanent damage was done when that car hit me.”
“Do they know who did it?” Nathan asked.
“I don’t think so, if they do, Simons hasn’t said. I think he’s been too focused on finding Travis to look into my case,” Jillian said.
“He needs to do it,” Nathan said. “Whoever tried to harm you needs to pay. Just like they’ll pay for taking Travis.”
Laughter came from the room, and they walked closer to the door to find out what was going on.
“You are clever,” Geneva said from where she sat on Travis’ bed.
“That he is,” the nurse said, and she began laughing again as she rolled the wheelchair from the room.
“What have you been telling?” Nathan asked.
“How Carlos and I became fast friends,” Travis said, and the sound of his stomach rumbling was audible. “Where’s my food?”
“It should be here soon,” his father said.
“I hope it’s good,” Travis said.
And the whole room laughed because they knew that hospital food was anything but.
CHAPTER 18
After taking Geneva home,Nick took Jillian out to eat to celebrate Travis being found before they went back to the McGinty house. He walked her to the guesthouse as they enjoyed the sunset.
“Now that we’ve found Travis and it looks like I’m no longer in danger does that mean you will be leaving tomorrow?” she asked.
“I’ll be leaving tonight,” he said. “There’s no reason for me to stay in the guest room now that the McGinty’s have returned from the honeymoon. They need their privacy.”
“I wish you didn’t have to go so soon,” Jillian said leaning against her front door.
“It isn’t as if I am going that far away,” he said. “I live in town. We just didn’t meet until I took this case. I’d like to see you again if you are interested in keeping in touch.”
“Yes,” she said and smiled brightly. “I am most interested.”
“Good.”
“You want to come in for a drink or something?” she asked.
“I’d rather see if Mrs. Hudson might have baked a pie in our absence today,” he grinned. “I’m sure going to miss that.”
Jillian laughed. “I guess I better learn how to bake.”
“That sounds like a plan,” he agreed, and he leaned in to kiss her.
She wrapped her arms around his neck and responded to the kiss with one of her own and when they broke apart, they were breathless.
He leaned his forehead against hers. “As much as I’d like to come in and have a drink and sit on that pretty sofa with you kissing for hours, I’d better leave now. I need to go pack my things and get out of the house before the McGinty’s come home.
