“I’m sorry,” he suddenly tenses and groans. “Fuck, I’m sorry.”

“What’s wrong?” I try to raise up too quick causing my chest to pinch and ache, as he pulls back to kneel.

There, between us is his cock.

Still nicely plump, coated in our combined release.

But he is bare as the day he was born.

Whoa.

He scrubs his hands over his face as my heart turns over inside my chest and a strange warm sensation erupts behind my belly button.

Is that my hormones?

My scientist brain is trying to figure that out when he interrupts my analysis.

“We could be pregnant,” he says solemnly. “Or more accurately, getting pregnant right now. This second.”

A vision of a sperm racing along, finding an egg pops into my head. Yes. We could be getting pregnant right now. That’s how it works.

Blinking, I sit up. The earth is a little tilted, my head a little wobbly. There’s also a parched desert in my mouth.

Pregnant. A baby. With Justice.

“We could be,” I whisper, trying to decipher the look in his face until a shrill female voice screams somewhere inside the house.

TWENTY-SEVEN

This is the moment where you need to be two places at once.

“Stay here. Lock the door.” My words are commanding, the kind of tone that doesn’t invite discussion.

Every cell in me demands I stay and protect what’s mine, but a scream in the night doesn’t get an optional response.

It’s an ‘on’ switch.

I grab my weapon first, then my pants, in that order. Priorities, always.

There’s barely time to get my zipper up and boots on before I open the door.

My pulse is still pounding from being with Rosalie.

Her scent, her warmth is still all over me, but my adrenaline spikes hard enough to burn the afterglow right out of me.

“Do not leave this room until I come for you.”

She scrambles off the bed, dragging a sheet around her.

“Be careful,” she begs.

It guts me to leave her, but that’s what I do.

The lights are on in the hallway when I slide out the door, closing it behind me. The lock clicks quietly and I’m still so tuned into her, I can feel her on the other side of the door.

Going from the dim light in the bedroom, to the brightly lit hallway gives another shot of energy.

Truck appears from one of the guest rooms, weapon raised, eyes razor sharp.
