He rubs his hand over his head, looking slightly annoyed. “Because of yesterday.” He shrugs. “Dad will have my head if I don’t apologize.” A frown graces his beautiful face, looking annoyed to be here, and he doesn’t even look at me properly. “And Liam won’t even talk to me,” he adds, like that’s my fault.

I wait for a moment. He said he wanted to apologize, but I figure that was it, as he doesn’t say anything else. Wow, that was heartfelt. “It’s okay,” I nod. I can sense the tension around him. Something in my chest clenches painfully, but I know I have to let it go. I can’t expect everyone to like me. I can’t please everyone.

I wonder if I upset him somehow or if I did something wrong, but then… he doesn’t know me. Not everything is because of my behavior or because of me.

Maybe he doesn’t like me because I’m Liam’s mate.

Maybe he doesn’t deem me worthy of his brother.

Who knows?

“What are you doing here?” he asks.

I wonder why he keeps making conversation. “Isn’t it obvious?” I smile slightly in the direction of the tree while I add a few flowers to the flower crown I’m making. “I’m making a crown for a princess.”

Emily’s head pops up all of a sudden. She went into hiding when she saw Marius approach. Now she scoots closer again. “Come,” I smile, placing the flower crown on her head. “Every princess needs a crown.”

I notice how a bunch of other girls suddenly come closer. “You look so pretty, Emi.”

“Is that a flower crown?”

“Am I a princess too? Can I have a crown too?”

A few boys approach us too. “Can a prince also have a crown?”

“No, we are men! Men don’t have crowns!”

“Of course, men can have crowns,” I explain. “Princes and Princesses can have crowns. What do you say, Emily?” I smile at her. “Being a sole princess is boring, isn’t it?”

She nods eagerly, her eyes lighting up.

“I’ll show you all how to make them.”

I turn my head to look at Marius again, wondering if he has more to say or maybe wants to join the kids and me, but he isn't standing next to me anymore. I can see him walking back towards the pack house. I wonder if I should call out to him but then decide against it. I don't want to force him into liking me. It can't be helped.

Instead, I turn my attention back to the children. We spend another hour making flower crowns before Aryanna comes to pick me up. She promised she would show me the outer areas of the pack. She leads me through a small path through the forest, explaining to me how their patrols work, their training schedule and the like.

“Do you like it here?” she asks hopefully.

I’m a bit surprised by how many people here ask me the same question. It seems like they really want me to like the pack and the wolves here. Were they that worried that I would hate it? Well, I guess being with Liam puts me in a higher position, and they want to make sure I won’t have any second thoughts. “I love it,” I say honestly. “Besides,” I stretch my neck, revealing my mark. “There is no going back anyways.”

Her eyes widen, and she beams. “Oh, Annie, I’m so happy for the both of you!”

I blush slightly. “I know, it took us a while. I was a bit scared at first.”

“Of Liam?”

“No, not of Liam.” I shake my head. “But of the responsibility, his rank. You know, I was scared. I-” I pause in my tracks.

“Annie?” Ari frowns.

“It’s just,” I turn around slightly, feeling a shiver run down my spine. There it is again. That weird feeling, like someone is watching me. “Are you sure we are alone?”

Ari’s frown grows. “You feel like someone is following us? Again?”

“Maybe I’m just being paranoid…” I offer, hopefully.

She pulls me behind her, scanning the area. I can feel her taking a deep breath. “I don’t smell any wolves.” She frowns. “Actually, I don't smell much at all." She looks around nervously. "Let's head back, to be safe, and talk to Alpha Elden and Liam.”
