When I reach the front door, I see that Vincent has already parked the car. Ella jumps out, looking around frantically. There is clear worry in her eyes. Meanwhile, Edward runs around the car, helping Rosalee out of it. She isn’t very tall, and our SUVs are quite high.
Rosalee’s normally kind and gentle face is showing nothing but worry. She tied her light brown hair back loosely and threw on a pair of dark jeans and a flowery blouse. Obviously, she was in a hurry, but it didn’t take away from her charm. “Liam!” she calls out and hurries towards me.
“Rosalee,” I greet her, thankful when she hugs me. Everything about her radiates kindness. I’m not surprised she raised three wonderful children. I liked her from the first moment on. Ella follows suit. “Come, she is here. She is stable.” I soothe her and Ella. “She is already recovering.”
“Thank you for saving her,” she whispers.
“She saved herself,” I smile.
Vincent nods. “I told you, Mrs Preston, she put up quite a fight. Tough girl you have here,” he says shortly.
Rosalee blushes, but Ella shoots him a glare. “Of course, she is tough,” she huffs. “Annie has always protected the weak.”
She really isn’t scared of anything or anyone. Kinda like Aryanna, just a bit angrier, and she is very protective of Annalise. I need to keep that in mind. I touch her back while I open the door for her and Rosalee in a seemingly casual gesture. “It’s unbelievable this happened,” I mutter.
Finn is walking right behind us, and I notice his gaze on me. He instantly knows what I’m doing, and he probably doesn’t like it as Ella is his friend, but he lets me do my thing.
Ella nods fiercely. “I don’t understand how anyone would do that to Annie! What happened? Do you already know any details?”
“Unfortunately not,” I say. “She is not awake yet.” I allow my mind to focus, linking with Ella’s without her noticing. I spent years polishing and training my gift. Now, I can easily pass any barriers to a person's mind. “Have you heard anything about her in your pack?” I ask casually. “The last time you were there.”
She looks at me, surprised. “No, why would I? Alpha Marcus just made a five-minute appearance, yelled at everyone, slapped a member of his kitchen staff, and then disappeared. Not before telling me to get off his pack grounds again.”
She is not lying. Still, her words confuse me. If her Alpha wants to get rid of her, what’s stopping him?
I let my hand drop down again. For now, it’s enough for me to know that she isn’t lying. She had no idea about what happened to Annalise, and her words of concern were genuine too. Annalise would probably be angry if she knew I just used my gift on her best friend, but I needed to make sure. Ella is from Red Claw, and I can’t let her inside my pack if she is part of a scheme… unwilling or not.
Chapter thirty-five
Chapter 35 Inner strength
*LIAM*
IleadEllaandRosalee to the second floor of the infirmary, to Annalise’s room, trying my best to fight the urge to run there. I neither want to worry them more nor scare them. Once we reach the room, Rosalee drops her bag, pushes past my parents without even noticing them, and hurries to her daughter’s side. “Oh, my sweetheart,” she sighs, her fingers brushing over Annalise’s hair before taking her hand into hers. “What did those men do to you? How could Lauren be involved in hurting you?”
Ella blinks, her eyes widening. She stumbles a bit, and I grab her arm; again, her surprise is real. She stares at my father and me for a moment, completely unfazed by our powerful presence. “Lauren!? That stupid brainless dunce!?”
“See,” Finn mutters. “She shares my sentiment.” He throws a glance at me, and I drop my hand again.
I told you, she would never hurt Annie,he says.
It's not that I don't trust your judgment. I do, and I know you are friends.I say calmly. But Annalise is my mate and she could have died today. I can't allow myself to be sentimental. I need to check on all possibilities.
I can see understanding in his eyes. So? What's your verdict?
She didn't lie,I admit.
Finn nods with a gaze that says, 'told you so'.
"So, was Lauren their leader?" My mother wants to know.
“Lauren is not smart enough to pull that off!” Ella insists.
Again, I’m amazed that she speaks her mind so openly. Other wolves would cower in fear in front of my parents, but she doesn’t. “She is a sociopath, though,” my father points out. He seems to immediately like her too. Just like me, he has always had a thing for brave wolves. “Are you sure she wouldn’t be able to plan all that?”
“Absolutely positive,” she says with conviction. “She is vile and lacks any empathy or sense. She is not a complete idiot, but she is definitely not smart enough to plan all of this! Finn told me they hired humans. Lauren? Hiring humans? With what… no money and an A cup?”
My father and I exchange a gaze. “She is right. We need to talk about this later,” I say. “I want to know more about it.”
