There are a few more answers I need before I can go home with Liam. I want to know what’s going on with me, why my body doesn’t react to wolfsbane anymore. I need to discuss this with Dr Henrick, and decide to take Liam and Finn with me for support. My mother had to go back home once I was doing better, but Elden has invited my family over for a family get-together next weekend, so it won’t be too long until I see her again.
Ella is still here. She wants to help us by revealing everything she knows about her pack and Alpha. It’s going to be risky for her, but Liam promised her to protect her, and let her stay in Silverlake.
“The best way to put it,” Doctor Henrik starts. “Is that your body has built up a resistance against wolfsbane and silver.”
My eyes widen. “How? What’s wrong with me?”
“Nothing is wrong, Miss Annalise,” he soothes me. “Let me put it like this: Your immune system seems to adapt fast and effectively. You can compare it to a human who gets a vaccine. I'm simplifying this a lot now, but they normally receive a small amount of the virus so that their bodies can adapt and fight it. With your immune system, it’s similar, just stronger. I did a few tests with your blood and the drugs they gave you. Guess what?”
“The effect wore down too?” Liam asks, the look in his eyes almost hopeful.
The man nods. “If you received the same shot now, it wouldn’t work on you. I’m taking a wild guess here, but it seems that as a werewolf, your body knew that wolfsbane and silver are a danger for you. Hence it made you immune. The drugs came as a surprise, which is why your body needed more time to adapt to them.”
Finn tilts his head slightly. “Combining this with the fact that an Alpha’s will doesn’t work on you either… It’s almost like the Moon Goddess wanted to prepare you before she mated you with Liam. It’s like she upped your defense mechanisms.”
“I agree,” the doctor smiles.
Finn grins. “No wonder you never seem to get drunk.”
I roll my eyes. “Might be because I don’t drink too much.” I put a hand on Liam’s knee, smiling when he pulls me closer. “What are you thinking?”
“That I have a pretty dope mate,” he says, grinning. “They underestimated you because you are an Omega wolf.He pauses, tilting his head like he wants to say more.
“What is it?” I ask curiously.
“I’m just wondering… you have a lot of hidden talents,” he muses. “I would like to discuss this further with my father. I’m starting to wonder why you tested Omega.”
I’m a bit surprised by his words. “You think my resistance to silver and wolfsbane is a gift?”
“You don’t?”
I don’t know what to say. I feel normal. Nothing has really changed with how I feel about myself. Ever since my connection to Leah started to grow, I feel more confident in my own skin. And it seems that apparently, I’m not as defenseless as everyone believed. But if it puts Liam’s mind at ease to research my newfound gifts, I won’t stop him. I’m actually a bit curious too.
When we get back to my hospital room, he helps me gather my stuff. “Now,” I flash him a bright smile and reach out my arms towards him. “You may take me to our home.”
His eyes light up… he looks almost cute for a second, then he is back to being cool and dignified.
Strong manly Alpha,Leah giggles.Has an image to maintain.
I’m completely well again one day later, although Liam still fusses over me. It’s kinda cute, though. Liam and I decide to switch between living in the packhouse during weekdays and staying at the bungalow on the weekends.
Elden has called everyone to a meeting today. He wants to talk with Ella and get some details from her concerning Red Claw. He waited for me to be well enough to attend too. Ella will stay with us for now. I was worried for her safety at first. If she betrays her pack, then she won’t be safe anywhere. But Liam has promised me that they will make sure to offer her an alternative, a possibility to stay here.
We meet her on our way to the meeting room. She looks tired but also determined. When we enter the room, she suddenly stops in her tracks. She pauses, taking a few deep breaths before scanning the room frantically. Her eyes finally land on Dante. She blinks, looking around for a moment, then at me… then staring at him again. Her mouth drops open.
I instantly know what this means. My heart makes a careful happy jump for my best friend who has already suffered so much in her life. Dante is one of the kindest men I have ever met. He is calm and composed but not cold. There is something very comforting and gentle about him, yet he is strong and protective. He is Liam's Beta for a reason. He is such a good person despite the bad things that happened to him in the past. My heart breaks whenever I think about how he never got the chance to meet his unborn baby. He deserves a second chance as much as Ella does.
Dante seems to be too spellbound to do or say anything. He just stares at Ella, his eyes wide. He probably never expected to meet his second chance mate. Something flashes in his eyes as I watch, something protective and... raw. I’ve never seen his Lycan before, but I assume that’s him.
Goddess, I need to talk to someone now, or I feel like I will burst. Since Liam is the only person I can mind link in this room, it has to be him.I can’t believe it!I squeal in his mind.
Liam jumps a little when he hears my overexcited voice, but he immediately catches on and smiles.I hoped they would be mates,he admits.
You knew?I glare without any heat.
He chuckles.Knew would be an overstatement. But he caught an intoxicating scent after you woke up. I hoped it would turn out to be Ella.
You didn't want to get my hopes up too high?
