“What did he say?”

“How much he loves you, how much he longs for you,” I say bluntly.

I did not say that!

“And how much he misses you.”

“I miss him too,” Annalise says with a smile. “Leah can’t wait to see him again soon. When this war is over, let’s go for a long run.”

All right.Fenris sounds pleased. That sounds better!

“Everything will go well,” I soothe her. “You have never seen me fight, have you? I am strong.”

“I know you are,” she pauses. “I just have a weird feeling about this.”

Me too, but I don’t want to tell her. I will be extra cautious, though. “I will be careful. I have to do this, Annalise. I want to save as many people as possible.”

“I know.” She smiles at me, and there is pride in her eyes when she looks at me. I have no idea if I even deserve that.

“Now that’s settled, there is one more thing to do,” I sneak my arm around her waist, pulling her closer to me. I look into her beautiful honey brown eyes before pulling her into a kiss. “Don’t forget your payback for when I return,” I whisper against her lips.

“I won’t.” She winks at me cutely. “I’ll have a surprise for you once you come back.”

“And what’s that?”

“It involves me and ties… and a blindfold,” she leans closer, biting my earlobe softly. I am equally amazed and turned on by how good she is at seducing me. Sometimes, she is so sweet and innocent, and then she can turn into this femme fatale who has me in the palms of her hands. I love it, though. “How about me being at your mercy entirely, Alpha? For you to tease and touch while restraining me. Would you like that?”

I can feel my more primal instincts in me fighting to get to the surface. My lovely mate… tied to the bed frame, her eyes covered by a silky blindfold, legs spread open. Eager and ready for me, begging for me to take her.

Annalise kisses me once more. “Keep that thought,” she whispers. “Come back safely. Once you do, we can play.”

I make out with Annalise until it's time to go. I didn’t expect it would be so difficult to let her go and leave her behind. I have turned into a complete sap it seems. Not that I mind, though. If it weren’t for this whole mess with Red Claw, I would have canceled everything and spent my day with her.

Meanwhile, Aryanna has gathered the warriors I chose to come with us. For a split second, I considered taking Aurelia along too because of her immense progress. She is a natural, but I decided against it once I thought everything through.

She doesn’t take it particularly well, though. “Is it because I am your sister?”

“No,” I say evenly.

“Because I am a woman?”

“Definitely not.”

“Why then?” She sounds frustrated.

“Listen, I had you on my list,” I tell her honestly.

Her eyes light up. “You did?”

“Yes, but we are on an undercover mission in a very precarious situation and area. It’s a special emergency. You haven’t done anything like this yet. It’s too much of a risk to take you along. I only chose veterans for this mission. I chose no one without years of experience.”

She blinks. “That’s all?”

“Yes,” I say, surprised. What did she expect?

“So, for the next mission, you might consider me?”

I smack her shoulder with the paper in my hand. “Keep up the good work, and it'll be a yes.”
