“Aw.” Dave’s eyes turn teary as he hugs her. “I love you too. I won’t allow anyone to hurt you anymore!”

“Jeez,” she huffs, but I don’t miss the pleased smile on her face. “Get off me.”

“I still don’t get it though,” Dave says. “I know you explained it already a while ago, and I watched a documentary about wolves, which didn’t help much.”

Ella and I both laugh at the fact he tried to understand our world by watching a wild-life documentary about wolves. Cute. “What do you want to know?”

“How are your ranks chosen?” Dave asks. “Annie’s family consists of Betas, but she isn’t. How come?”

“Bad luck,” I say. “Every pup… every werewolf baby gets tested within the first three years of their life. The test is provided by the Lycan Council, and it’s been put together by their allied witches and the Elders of the Council. The goal was to make sure parents know that they might have gifted children, not to divide the society.”

“It’s a blood test,” Ella explains further. “And it’s supposed to detect the gifts we are born with, and furthermore detect our auras, if you want to call it that way. Our amount of strength. Wolves without a gift are Omegas. Wolves with one gift are Betas - not to mix it up with the position of a Beta though. Anyone can be announced Beta through their Alpha.” She pauses. “Those who rank Alpha through the test have more than one gift, and their auras are much stronger. Even if not all of them become reigning Alphas, they are always going to be in a higher position due to the nature of their being.”

“It’s also the reason only wolves or Lycans with Alpha blood in them can become reigning Alphas,” I add. “Beta wolves normally lack the urge to lead, and as Ella said before their auras are vastly different from an Alpha’s.”

“What about the gifts?” Dave asks. “Is it super-crazy stuff like mind-reading?”

“Wolves with Alpha blood can have multiple gifts, and normally their gifts are indeed a bit more intense to ensure that they are strong enough to lead. It’s said that Lord Finn’s father, Alpha Elden of Silverlake, can actually look into the future, which is a very rare gift,” I explain. “But that’s not just because he is an Alpha. He is also of royal lineage. It’s said that the descendants of the royal families are particularly blessed. Usually though gifts only enhance certain traits we already have. For example it makes a Beta wolf heal faster, or be stronger.”

“There are wolves with very rare or powerful gifts though, but they normally come with a downside to them,” Ella explains further. “It’s to prevent them from using their gifts recklessly.”

Dave nods thoughtfully. “So, can a child be born into an Omega family yet be a Beta?” he asks. “And can a child born to an Alpha rank Omega?”

“Yes,” I answer.

“Can any child rank Alpha?” Dave continues.

“No, only children born to an Alpha female or male can rank Alpha,” I explain. “You need the Alpha blood in you. It’s impossible to rank Alpha if not at least one of your parents is of Alpha blood.”

“So, what about our pretty edge-lord?” Dave asks.

Ella bursts into a fit of giggles. “Edge-lord? I sort of like that.” She grins.

“He comes from the Silverlake pack. He is one of the leading Alpha’s children.” I pause, unsure how to explain it well and decide to keep it simple. “His father, Lord Elden, is the Iron Alpha. The name comes from his strength as a wolf and from the strength of his pack. He leads one of the strongest packs. Also, he is a descendent of one of the old aristocratic wolves, the Lycans. He is a true Alpha with blue blood running through his veins. The Lycan blood makes him incredibly powerful.”

Dave listens closely, tilting his head. “What about your Alpha?”

“Alpha Cedric is not from Lycan heritage,” I explain. “Most wolves aren’t anymore. We’re born as Alphas or Betas or Omegas, depending on our gifts and heritage, or get the rank handed to us if we have outstanding talents. The only exception is the rank of an Alpha.”

Ella nods. “Silverlake pack is way more elite, you could say. The Iron Alpha, as a Lycan, is not someone you oppose. If you ever see him, you will instantly note the difference from any wolves you have encountered. He is an aristocrat from a direct Lycan Alpha lineage. The beginning of us all. This is what Annie means about him being a true Alpha.”

“And the edge-lord?” Dave asks curiously.

Ella and I burst into giggles again. “Please don’t upset a Lycan,” I chuckle. “Please, Dave.”

“He is not here, though.” Dave shrugs.

“Finn is the third oldest son,” I explain patiently. “He is born an Alpha, which makes him quite…” I pause. “Appealing.”

“You mean… they are all hitting on him?” Dave raises his eyebrows. “Kind of like if Prince William would have enrolled here?”

“Kind of…” I say warily. It’s not comparable to human royalty.

“No surprise everyone is going crazy,” he muses.

“That’s not the only reason,” Ella points out. “Lord Finn is unmated. So, every she-wolf here is probably hoping she will be his destined mate. Even if he, as only the third son, is not going to inherit the throne from Lord Elden and rule over the pack, he will still be one of the highest-ranking Alphas in the world. Most girls seem to find this thought very appealing.”

“I find it scary,” I mutter.
