He smiles at her. “Why?” he teases dryly. “You want to be the bad wolf?”
It’s rare for him to crack such a joke, so Ari and Annalise burst into giggles. I smile too. “What are you up to?”
“Luna Flora asked me to bring some things to Emerson,” he explains. “She is still worried about Daisy.”
“Is Daisy still not feeling better?” I ask in worry.
Calvin shrugs. “I don’t know much. Luna Flora only told me that they got bad news.”
“What kind of bad news?” Ari asks now and exchanges a surprised gaze with me. She looks so worried.
“I don’t know any details,” Calvin admits. It’s funny how he knows so many details about most pack members, but when it’s about someone’s health or state of mind, he is completely oblivious.
Still, his words worry me. “I will ask my mother about it later.”
She hasn’t told you yet?Annalise links me.I guess she forgot to tell you because of the whole scare when I got abducted, and Aurelia and Nox were so badly hurt.
I’m surprised.What’s going on?
The look in her eyes turns sad.I don’t know if it’s a secret or not, but I know you will keep it to yourself. It seems that Daisy can’t conceive any more children.
Goddess no! My heart aches for my old friend Emerson and his kind mate. They suffered so much already during her difficult pregnancy. All the complications during labor when Emerson almost lost both of them. I heard that the pack doctor even told him at one point that he might need to decide whose life to save.
What man would want to face that choice? Decide which life is more worthy of living? His mate’s or his child’s?
I reach out my hand toward Calvin. “I’m finished with training. We can go visit Emerson and Daisy.”
Calvin looks relieved, handing me over the basket without inquiring further. I know he has a lot of work to do for my father, and he doesn’t care much for small talk anyway. Besides, I figure Annalise might like paying Emerson and Daisy a visit. By the way her eyes gleam up at me, it seems I guessed correctly.
“I hope you two lovebirds don’t mind me joining,” Ari jokes while we make our way to Emerson.
“Not at all,” I deadpan.
Ari grins. “Wow, that was heartfelt, Alpha.”
“Don’t worry, Ari,” Annalise chuckles. “I really don’t mind.”
We meet Emerson outside in his garden, collecting strawberries together with… isn’t that the little orphaned girl Emily? Emily seems to be surprisingly cheerful. “We are making a strawberry cake today, right, Uncle Em?”
He nods, giving her a warm smile. “Aren’t I lucky that I have such a strong helping hand?”
She beams. “I know everything about strawberries.”
“That’s good,” he chuckles. “Because I don’t know anything. You need to show me how to wash and prepare them for the cake.”
She nods eagerly. “Can Fleur have some too?”
“She is too small to eat. She just wants milk,” Emerson explains patiently. “But we can practice and in a few months, make another cake for her.”
Emily nods eagerly. “Good.” She jumps around excitedly until she finally sees us. She squeals in delight, running towards Annalise and wrapping her small arms around her. “Annie.”
Emerson looks up, too, a surprised smile on his face.
“We don't want to disrupt anything,” I say. “My mother just prepared some things for Daisy.”
“You aren’t disrupting anything,” he tells me. “We were about to have tea, coffee and cookies in a few minutes. Why don’t you join us?”
Annalise reaches out her hand to take Emily’s. “Come, princess,” she coos. “Let’s go and see if Aunt Daisy needs some help.”
