I want to run up to him, free him from these chains, hug him, and pull him into my arms to make all the scars and wounds disappear.
When I turn to Elden, his eyes are dark with anger. He looks very close to ripping everything apart. A part of me wonders why he doesn’t do it. He could easily burn this place down now. He seems to recognize my curious thoughts, turning to me and willing his anger away.
“He is in such a bad state,” I whisper miserably.
“Yes, but also no,” Elden says with conviction, but there is a hint of sadness in his voice. “Liam and I can tolerate way more pain than most wolves and even other Lycans. It’s in our bloodline. He is just keeping it low to make them believe he suffers.”
“But the chains…” I whisper.
“Silver might keep him in check at the moment,” Elden whispers. “So does the wolfsbane they injected him with.”
I sense there is more to it. “But?”
“You want to know why I’m not heading out there, ripping his chains off and killing everyone?” Elden mutters. He turns to look at me directly. “He thought of all of this. He built a plan to save Red Claw when he was being captured. He has kept his senses locked in to keep his strength. They indeed tortured him, but silver and wolfsbane don’t affect him as much as they did once. He is close to unleashing his full potential. And you brought it forward. It’s all thanks to you. That’s why – even if you think you are too normal, you aren’t. To him, you are the sun shining through the forest after a long rainy day; you are the light, you are his world, and he is circling you because that’s how special you are to him.”
“That’s why you are leaving now?” I ask.
“For now,” Elden smiles. “This moment belongs to you and him. Liam is strong, he doesn’t need me to save him, and you don’t need me here either. Liam hasn’t unleashed Fenris’ full power yet… he has never done it, too scared not to have control over him. But today you are here, the one person who means more to him than anyone else. With you close to him, he has full power over Fenris. He can save himself, and I want him to know that. My presence might just ruin it. He will be a great ruler, a fantastic Alpha to his pack.”
“Do mates normally have this power?” I ask quietly. “To help an Alpha to reach his full potential?"
“No, not to that extent,” he admits. “But you are special.”
I’m surprised. What does that mean for me? I always believed I was an Omega without any gifts, nothing special, and now Elden is implying that Liam can break free because of me. I swallow. There is no time to think about this now, though. My priority is Liam now, then Red Claw, and everything else we can solve later.
“Listen, Annie, I want you to trust your instincts. Only you can reach out to Liam, which is why I made sure no one else accompanies us.”
“Any advice you have for me?” I ask nervously.
“I cannot be too distinctive in my advice,” he explains. “My gift to look into the future is very peculiar. But I’d say, us Alphas react horribly if our mate gets hurt…even a bit. This doesn’t mean you should run right into a knife though.”
I look at him, a plan forming in my mind, and when Elden nods his approval, I figure I got it right.
“You know what to do?”
I take a deep breath. “Yes!”
He gives me a curt nod and squeezes my shoulder softly. “I’m leaving the rest to you, Annie.”
Once he has left, I shift my attention back to the scene in front of me. Elden is heading back now, which means they will attack Red Claw soon. Ella and Elden will try to buy us some time and negotiate, especially Ella as our trump card. Still, I don’t have a lot of time left.
Liam is guarded by six men. I take a deep breath, deciding to for once allow my instincts to kick in. I didn’t have much training yet, but I already learned some tricks from Elden and Ari.
Sneaking up to the first guard on the side, I attack him swiftly with a silver knife, making sure to kill him immediately. Surprise is on my side. I know Liam has sensed me already, even if he might not have fully grasped my presence yet. He is chained to the cell wall and drugged, but his breath goes more rigid. Now that I’m a bit closer, it looks like he was beaten and stabbed several times. There is dried blood all over his upper body. But they didn’t kill him. Probably wanted to make it public. He knew that beforehand.
“Liam!” I call out.
I know I’m taking a massive risk here, but I have faith in Liam’s abilities, just like Elden told me to. I have faith in him like I have faith in myself.
When I close my eyes, I can feel Leah inside me, her presence emitting a light like the goddess blessed us. I know she did. She blessed me with a loving family, a good pack to grow up in, supportive friends, plenty of opportunities, and a wonderful mate. My love for Liam is strong and real. It’s like a thinthread connecting us. I reach out to it in my mind, touching it softly, my body vibrating with all the emotions I’m feeling. I allow my mind to follow the thread, right towards Liam. The bond connects us, strong, confident and unbreakable. I reach out towards him, feeling both Fenris and Liam so strongly; their presence is still so strong, covered beneath a layer of pain and wolfsbane and silver. It's nothing, though. Liam will be able to break through it, I can already feel him stir beneath the surface, I can feel Fenris’ strength and anger growing, and above all, Liam’s love and faith in me.
I can see a shiver going through his body, his eyes blinking open.Liam,I link him, noting how he starts tugging at his chains. I can feel his mind now like I’m touching it.You can do it! Save me again, just like I’m saving you. Let’s save each other!
A few guards are circling me now, but I don’t care. The next guard to attack me… I let it happen. I let him punch me and send me flying to the ground. He hovers above me. “Maybe we can have some fun with this cute one here,” he sneers.
I can hear a growl, loud and ground-shaking.Fenris!
There is the sound of chains being ripped, and I slightly shift my angle to see what’s going on. The guards have stopped coming after me, afraid of what’s in front of them. Liam has tugged one of the silver chains off the wall. His eyes are black, and dark veins are popping up prominently on his neck and face now. “You will pay for this,” he yells. His voice is low and raspy, like a growl.
