I hold back a sigh. You are like a nagging old uncle, you know that?
Better be happy for my sense of reason,he argues. And who the heck are you calling old!?
I decide to ignore him and instead stand up without overthinking it. “I’ll take my leave too. Thank you all for your help today. We will see each other for breakfast. I wish everyone a good night.”
No one asks anything or intervenes, and I leave swiftly. Once back in our room, I notice Annalise has taken a shower, now only dressed in her underwear and covered by a bathrobe. I struggle with primal instincts. Goddess, she’s so hot!
But she needs me right now.
She looks at me in surprise for a moment when she sees me, then jumps up and throws herself into my arms.
“Have you ever read Jean-Paul Sartre?” she asks quietly after a while.
I nod.
“Hell is other people,” she says evenly. A shudder rakes through her body.
“I’m so sorry you had to take on such a difficult task alone,” I say softly. “I should have been there with you.”
“You couldn’t,” she breathes out shakily. “There was no way you could… One of the girls showed me her doll. She’s only three. This girl had a broken arm. Who would even… who does something like that!? I mean, what kind of person… what… who…”
She stops, her body shaking more violently now. A sob escapes her lips, soon followed by another before she breaks down crying. I rub my hand over her back soothingly, pulling her even closer to my chest. My heart breaks seeing her like this. I feel so angry at Marcus for abusing his power, for destroying so many lives.
“I promise I’ll make sure that each one of them will receive therapy and treatment,” I mutter into her hair. “I’ll make sure that everyone in this pack will be treated with dignity and be safe.

*LIAM*
Annalisestirsinmyarms. After moving to the sofa, she fell asleep. I felt so worried for her, I couldn’t close my eyes, not when she was that sad and crushed. Now she seems to be fully awake again. When she looks at me, the anguish is gone from her eyes, and I breathe a sigh of relief.
“I’m sorry,” her cheeks flush a bit.
“What for?”
“For having a complete mental breakdown,” she groans. “I can’t believe you saw that.”
“I’m glad I saw it!” I tell her firmly. “I would have felt completely crushed had I found out that you cried in secret. I’m your mate, Annalise. If you feel sad, I feel sad too. There is no way I can be happy when you’re not. No one is more important to me than you. Besides, I can sense your feelings from our mate bond. ”
She looks at me, eyes wide.
I feel instantly worried. “Did I say something wrong?”
“I love you so much, Liam,” she suddenly says. “So much that it hurts sometimes. It feels like I’ll wake up and find out it’s all just been a dream.”
“But it’s not,” I smile. “I’m here and very real. And I love you too. It’s not just because we are mates. The mate bond led me to you, but I fell head over heels for you because of who you are as a person.”
She snuggles against me. “I feel the same,” she says. “I can’t be happy when you’re not.”
“Do you feel better now?” I ask her.
She nods. “I’m good,” she smiles. “You were right. I needed to let it out to be strong again tomorrow. These kids and women will need me for a while. I feel a bit more confident now… I can handle it because I have to.” She pauses. “By the way, you know Renata?”
“The kitchen chef?”
“Yes, she is a 70-year-old lady who took in Marilou when she was orphaned. She told me that she defended Marilou against one of Marcus’ guys. He broke her arm, but other than that, she is unharmed.” She chuckles. “I wonder what she did to the warriors to scare them away!”
