“Dave,” Raffy whispers. “The guy on the right, he’s the beta. I can tell by his aura.”
“Got it.” I take a deep breath, wiping all the anxiety off my face. I open the window and lean out to eye the guys coming closer. “Can I help you?” I ask, pretending to be confused.
One of the guys sniffs the air slightly, and I can see their eyes glossing over. Mind-link coming through, it seems. Their expression softens when they look at me. I bet they don’t want to have a dead human body on their conscience.
“This is a private road,” the man, who Raffy told me is the beta, explains calmly. He eyes the inside of the car, probably taking notice of Raffy. Sugar uses this moment to bark loudly and growl, making the beta blink in surprise.
“I don’t know what got into him.” I sigh dramatically. “He normally only reacts that way in front of wild animals.”
The guy looks flustered, while one of the warriors can barely contain his grin.
“A private road, you say?” I sigh. “I apologize, we didn’t know.”
“That’s no problem,” the beta reassures me. “But we’ll need to check your papers… from both of you.”
“Sugar too?” I ask.
“Yes, your friend too,” he agrees.
I nod, getting out of the car and approaching the back of it, about to open it for Sugar to get out.
“No, not him,” the beta hurries to explain. “I wasn’t aware…” He takes a deep breath. “I was talking about you and your companion.”
“Ah,” I pretend to be flustered. “Sorry, I’m so ditzy sometimes.” Meanwhile, Raffy gets out too, and I can instantly notice the warriors’ stance changing. I pretend not to notice anything, though, and instead angle for my documents, showing it to the beta, who couldn’t be less interested in them.
They really need to up their acting. They suck.
“You see, they’re valid.” I beam. “If that’s all, we’d like to continue our drive.” I put the bag back into my car and smile brightly at the men in front of me.
The beta takes a deep breath. “I’m sorry,” he says, obviously unaware that I’m very aware of who they are. “But we know your friend there and would like to have—”
My brain works within seconds. Okay… what now? Alright, time to perform. I make sure to stare at the man in front of me wide-eyed, before eyeing the warriors next to him. “No way,” I whisper, making sure my voice trembles slightly. “I can’t get through this again.” I make quotation marks with my fingers. “A private road, huh? I should have known!”
The men are clearly confused.
I spin on my heels to stare at Raffy. “JEREMYYYYYY,” I call out, making sure to give my voice an annoying whiny tone. “You slept with them too?”
The guys stare at us, horrified. “Wait…” the beta hurries to say. “I think you misunderstood.”
Raffy blinks in confusion. He seems to be barely able to catch on. Men, sometimes they are so slow! “I’m sorry?” he finally offers.
That’s the worst performance I’ve ever encountered, but better than nothing. Thankfully, Mr. David Ford is here to save the day! Time for the award-winning performance. I have trained for this my whole life. I can do this. “Oh you,” I blurt out, staring at him like he truly wronged me, before I march over towards him, raise my hand, and crack my palm across his cheek. “I gave you everything, my body, my money, my virginity, yet I don’t know anything about you! What is it you can’t tell me? You left me first because I ama human kid who doesn’t get anything… You had an affair, didn’t you? Then you came crawling back to me on your knees, and what did I do?” I let out a shaky laughter. “Forgive you. Because that’s what I am, a forgiver. So last week, when you went to work… you had some fun too!? With these three steroid fitness studio guys?” I point at the three warriors, who look equally scandalized and embarrassed. Then I burst into tears. “That’s just too much.”
Raffy reaches out his hands to pull me into his arms.
“What do they have that I don’t?” I sob. “I could understand the blond guy,” I say, referring to the beta. “But the other two?”
“I… I was truly at work,” Raffy says into my hair.
“You’re always so secretive,” I cry. “What are you hiding?” Out of the corner of my eye, I can see one of the guys widening his eyes in horror. I know how much work it is for a pack if a human finds out about their existence. Been there, done that.
“I’m not hiding-”
“You are!” I whine. “If you didn’t bang these three… then what is it!?”
“You know what…” The beta takes a step back. “We might have mistaken your friend for someone else.” He turns to his men. “Right?”
“Yeah, we’re sorry, guys,” one of the warriors mutters. “Must have been a… misunderstanding…” He looks terrified, obviously scared I might involve him in my little scene. He makes a helpless gesture between his friends and Raffy. “We didn’t, you know—”
