The wannabe bikers get nervous. “We didn’t know you weren’t traveling alone,” the one I ran into rambles.

I didn’t know that either, but I’m certainly not going to tell them.

“Well, let’s be glad that nothing happened,” his friend chuckles nervously.

Before I can even blink, they are suddenly gone. I’m still looking for them, completely dumbfounded and surprised by what just happened before I turn to the axe murderer. He keeps rooted to his place and doesn’t seem to want to kill me.

I’m not sure if it’s better to run now or to stay cool. What happened in that last episode of the profiling crime show I watched? Don’t show fear? I mean, I could run, I guess, but I have zero stamina, so he would probably catch up with me.

I clear my throat. “Hello,” I say.

The axe murderer tilts his head and stares at me, his dark eyes gazing over me.

“I’m Dave. Nice to meet you. And you are?”

A grumble.

Wow, even Sugar is more talkative than this guy.

“Thank you for helping me out here,” I say, smiling at the potential killer.

He just scowls while scanning me over.

This is so weird. It feels like I’m talking to a wall. Maybe my pronunciation is off, or maybe, “Can you understand me?” I try again. “I said thank you.”

Again, nothing.

Okay, maybe he just can’t speak English. “Deutsch?” I offer hopefully. Nothing, not even a slight reaction. Maybe French, but fuck, my French is worse than my German. “Vous… parlons… parlez…eh… French?”

Nothing.

Great, maybe he is Spanish? The only Spanish I know is from an ex-lover I watched a porn movie with. “Soy… mucho…” Shoot, all I can think of is how that dude in the porn was chantingnecesito la verga, which apparently means that I need someone’s dick. Not a good way to start a conversation. “Mi nombre—”

“I can understand you,” he finally grunts.

I throw my hands in the air. “Finally,” I exclaim.

“What are you doing here at night?” he grumbles. Apparently, grumbling is his main way of communicating. “This area is dangerous.”

“You don’t say?” I raise my brows. I can swear something flashes in his eyes, making me gape. I know this look. Not everyone can magically change eye color. “Oh, it’s night, and the wolves are coming out,” I say, just to make sure I have a way out if he is just a human.

He looks at me in shock. “You…”

“Know, yes. Let’s cut the whole long-ass introduction. I’m Dave, human. I have wolf friends,” I blurt out.

He keeps staring at me, not introducing himself.

Yep, Sugar is certainly the better partner to gossip with; however, he’s also a huge cuddly monster and would probably hide behind me if we were to be attacked. I tilt my head a bit. Maybe I could bribe this killer dude with money? He has that hobo look going for him, so I assume the offer of paying him might be appealing… maybe.

That is unless he just escaped prison and is off to hunt pretty boys like me.

I decide to go with my gut feeling, though, as the feeling keeps telling me not to continue without him. “I’m going on a trip and need a bodyguard,” I say. I’m going to take any chance I get to help Finn. Maybe with a werewolf at my side, I will make achieving my goals easier. “The Goddess sent you. You can come with me. We are going to save my friend.”

A grumble. “What makes you think I will join you?”

I look him over, tilting my head. “Aren’t you homeless?” I ask. “I’d pay.”

He frowns. “I’m a rogue.”
