“Delicious,” he says.
I beam at him, noticing how a smile lights up his face when I do so.
“Do you want some too?” the landlady offers with a smile.
Raffy seems shocked she is talking to him and mutters something inaudible before shaking his head. “Don’t want to eat Dave’s food. He needs it.”
I grin. “Raffy, it’s not like I can eat all of it anyway.”
“There is plenty of it here.” The landlady chuckles too. “No reason to be shy, young man.”
Raffy looks a bit flustered for a moment but then nods. When the landlady shuffles away, he frowns though. “I’m not shy,” he grumbles.
“No.” I chuckle. “Just totally awkward.” When he glares at me, I grin. “But in a very endearing way.”
He tilts his head, furrowing his bushy eyebrows. “You find me endearing?”
I decide to be bold for once. “Yes.”
He nods thoughtfully. “You’re cute too,” he says, to my surprise.
I feel my cheeks heat a bit, both in slight embarrassment and joy. “Thank you,” I say, happily poking my food with my fork. He finds me cute. He said I’m cute. He said it right in front of me—there is no taking it back anymore!
“So, are we going to continue our journey tomorrow?” Raffy asks. “The area here is nice. Lots of trees and a forest.” He looks at me hopefully.
I tilt my head. “I think we can stay another night,” I tell him. We are on a journey to recover Raffy’s memory, and if he thinks it’s good to stay a day longer here, then so be it.
After dinner we retire to our room. Sugar is allowed to stay in the lounge area of the little bed-and-breakfast, with the landlady promising us she will let him out into the garden early in the morning. As promised, the room has two beds separated from each other, and I almost feel sad that it’s not one big bed like in the hotel earlier this week.
This time I would have made sure to have Raffy sleep next to me right from the beginning. But now it’s two beds, unfortunately. We are both tired, though, and get ready for sleep quickly. When I lie down in the warm, comfortable bed, I feel lonely all of a sudden. Raffy is here in the same room, yet he seems to be so far away.
My body seems to long for him. I frown at my thoughts. It’s similar to when I met Matthew, but still a bit different… Am I imagining things?
Mates or not, my mind and body are calling for him so much.
I shift around; okay… here goes nothing… how about…
“Raffy?”
“Hm?” Raffy’s gruff voice can be heard in the room.
“I’m cold.”
“Really?” he is up on his feet immediately, sounding worried. My heart skips a beat when he approaches my bed. Here he is coming, finally! “Here, you can have my blanket!” he says, throwing it over me and tugging me into it.
Then he retreats to his bed.
I’m rendered speechless. Is this what the heterosexual female population has to deal with and endure on a daily basis? That blatant naivety, the inability to read between lines, the freaking ignorance?
I was not aware before. Oh, Annie, Ella, and Celine, allow me to apologize to you on behalf of your mates, on behalf of the male population!
I wasn’t aware!
I rub my hands over my face, suppressing an annoyed and frustrated sigh.
“Everything alright?” Raffy asks into the silence. He must have sensed my annoyance.
“Yes,” I huff before turning to the side. “Good night.”
