I don’t comment on that. Anything I’d be able to say would be impolite at best and insulting at worst. “He is older than Vincent and I,” I say while skimming the folder. “Calvin, I mean.”
“Yes, he is a couple of years older. He has fighting experience,” Samuel explains.
“Did you meet him already?”
“Just once with his father. He is a composed young man and very attentive. He can easily focus on certain things and learnsfast. You will be a very young alpha, Elden, and despite your many gifts, you and your luna are inexperienced. Calvin is a great strategist, has done undercover work already and is very gifted.”
“Well,” I sigh. “It was part of the deal, but I want to meet him though.”
“Of course,” Samuel says.
“And I want him and Vincent to meet. They will work together, and I need to make sure they get along.”
Samuel nods. “Fair enough. I will set up a meeting.”
When he has left, I open the folder, looking at it in more detail. Calvin is around ten years older than I am with a handsome face and ashen hair. Samuel was right, his gifts are truly incredible, and his record is blemish-free. His only issue is that he seems to lack social skills, but there is a note that says a doctor has claimed he might either be on the spectrum or have ADHD. It’s not a real diagnosis though.
He could as well be socially awkward. I am not so good at that either.
His camouflage skills have to be amazing. He is so smart with using his gift he can make any traces disappear, setting up false traps and leads and manipulating enemies to his liking. It says he helped a pack once, by leading a whole group of rogues astray, and then making them disappear. He even has some shady contacts to the human world, which are helpful for any pack.
“Is that about the new guy?” Jace asks curiously.
I show him and Vincent the folder, watching how they are both in awe about what they are reading. “Goddess, his gifts sound amazing,” Jace mutters. “He must be a genius.”
“Next to him, I look like a loser,” Vincent snorts.
“Actually, I think he enhances your skills and vice versa. The folder says that his weak points are social interactions. That’sexactly where you will fill in,” I point out. “Also, judging by his skills, you are probably going to be the better fighter.”
Vincent looks content. “I’m good at socializing, buddy. I will always have my alpha’s back-“ he wiggles his brows. “Or his ass.”
Jace laughs while I smack Vince with the folder. “Please leave my ass out of this.”
“When are you going to meet him?” Vincent asks, skillfully shifting the topic.
“Samuel is organizing something,” I say. “I told him I want you to come too.”
“Got it,” Vincent says.
“Now, back to studying,” Jace says. “We have already wasted enough time.”
Another knock at the door rips us out of our studies. This time, I was too distracted to notice anyone approaching us. “Who can it be now?” Jace asks.
“We’ll see,” I say while opening the door, surprised to see the man in front of me. “Beta Oliver?”
“Young Alpha,” he says seriously. “It’s your mate. It seems like something happened and-“
I don’t let him finish his sentence, my mind suddenly running in circles on its own. Flora! Something happened to my mate! Regis pushes forward, and we knock Oliver aside and dash out of the room. Oliver calls my name, but there is no stopping me if Flora is in danger. I make it out of the pack house and to her cottage in record time. Only when I’m there do I realize I still feel the bond to her, and there is no sign that she is hurt or frightened.
Regis calms down as well, letting me push him to the back of my mind again.
“Elden,” Vincent calls out to me, making me turn around to see that Jace, Oliver and Vince have been following me.
“She isn’t in danger, Young Alpha,” Oliver yells, as he rushes closer. “I’m sorry if I gave the wrong impression. Lady Flora just asked me to tell you to drop by when you are done studying.”
I still feel worried, despite his words of reassurance.
“What’s going on?” Hazel peeks out of the front door, surprised when she sees our little gathering
