I grin. “I really am.”

More of Nova’s friends join us, as does Isla. Nova is polite when talking to her, but I can see that there is no real warmth between them, which says a lot, knowing how welcoming and approachable Nova is. “We were just talking about Lori,” one of the guys fills the others in. “She is Benji’s mate.”

“And so cute,” the other one adds.

I elbow him. “Hey, she is mine.”

He grins. “Sorry, man. We are just envious. I want my mate as well.”

“Oh, Anton, you idiot,” Nova grins. “Benji is going to become the gamma of his pack,” she adds. “Don’t cross him. I saw him train. He might squish you and your pea-sized brain in seconds.”

Anton puffs out his chest. “I am a good fighter,” he says, while prancing around.

“Against a gamma?” one of his friends laughs. “Please don’t. I don’t want to scratch your remains off the ground.”

He and Anton engage in a playfight, goofing off with each other, while the others cheer them on. Lori and Kitty use this moment to join us again, and much to my joy, Lori instantly comes to me, taking my hand.

“Look how cute you are,” Kitty squeals, starting to gush over us.

Both Lori and I turn bright red at her words. Please save me,Lori links me.

I was about to ask you to save me,I retort.

Lori chuckles softly. We really are a couple of weirdos.

Yep, but charming weirdos. And at least one of us is very beautiful.

It’s the first time I managed to remotely flirt with her – or any girl – and it makes me happy to see her blush.

“Okay, I am hopeless at this,” Kitty professes when she gazes at her burnt sausage. “Someone help me.”

Lori takes a spatula into her hands, trying to scrape some of the remaining parts of the sausage off the pan.

“You can have my sausage,” Anton offers while wiggling his brows.

“Goddess,” Kitty groans.

“You did not just say that,” I chuckle.

“What, I have a lot to offer!” Anton argues.

“Tact and intellect would be awesome,” Nova adds dryly.

“I am super-tactful!”

“Totally,” one of his friends chimes in. “You are such a charm.”

The others laugh.

“What do you think, Isla?” Anton turns to my ex-mate. “I am cool, aren’t I?”

She just shrugs, picking at her food. Anton looks taken aback at her attitude. It’s clear he was just joking around, just like the others.

“Don’t worry,” Kitty tells Anton in her good-natured attitude. “If we ignore your sleazy comments, you are actually fun.”

“Well,” Anton sighs. “Not everyone can be a gamma and have a mate.”

“That again,” I say.
