“Ever, don’t listen to her.”

“She made an insinuation. How do I not listen?”

“Skye is just trying to rile you up.”

“It’s working,” I mumble.

“Why are you single?” he asks, changing the subject and giving me whiplash.

“Why am I single?”

“Yeah.”

“I’m still hung up on the one guy I can’t have.” I let that sink in.

“Ever, can I talk to you a minute?” Uncle Sal breaks the spell Memphis has me under.

“Yep.” I need to walk away. I can’t let him in.

“Did you call a contestant a bitch?”

“I did not. But Sasha and Skye have it out for me and have insulted my dad or me or the others on numerous occasions. Sometimes mean girls have to be put in their place. I don’t expect you to get it. I guess at the same time, I’m tired of them thinking they’re better than me or Ivy or Ariel.” I know I sound like a child. To these women, I am. I’m almost ten years younger than most of them. Memphis and Skye are almost 33.

“You think you’re better?” Uncle Sal raises his eyebrows.

I laugh. “Didn’t say that either. The shit that you’re having them do, absolutely. But better at other things, no.”

“Why don’t you come on the show?”

“I’m sorry?”

“You are single. The prize is the guy you’ve been saving yourself for.” A little personal to be talking about with my uncle.

“Umm . . . ” I can’t think of anything to say.

“Think about it. Let me know in the morning.” He just grins and walks off. That guy is something else.

“You going to do it?” Brick asks from the stairs.

“I don’t know.” And I don’t. I can do all the things these girls are doing to win Memphis’s heart so much better.

“Why not?”

“I don’t want to just win a contest. I want to win the guy. I want my happily ever after. Memphis doesn’t want the same thing as me. These girls are proof of that. You were there. I tried once to win the guy and look how that turned out.” He cringes a little bit.

“I’m sorry about that. But people can change. Maybe it’s you that needs to also.”

“Brick, I have changed. Did you ever think I would stand up to Skye?” He shakes his head. “I will always love Memphis, but I can’t do that to my heart. He will only see me as that annoying little brat.”

“If you don’t want to try to win his heart, then do your own. Do your own dating show.”

“I’m not that kind of girl.” I don’t think I could put my life on camera

“No, you’re not. But that’s what Hollywood wants. Someone real.”

I shake my head.

“Give it a thought. It would be good for you. I’ve known you for a long time and I know you want more than just this. Nothing wrong with home, and Hickory, but get out more. A show could do that for you, open up endless opportunities.”
