“Are you sure about this?” We’re in the loft, she’s laying down her head in my lap. We came home from the bar but Ever didn’t want to go inside yet, so here we are hoping I can talk to her.

I love running my fingers through her silky hair. This feels like normal, it feels like home. I miss home.

“I’m sure.”

“But what if I don’t fit into your world?”

“You’re going to be my world.” She doesn’t say anything else.

I was informed by Sal that I’m bringing three girls on a date to meet my mother. Two won’t come back. Skye will be one of them and I’m dropping her at home. Her behavior since we were married has made her mother ill, from what I understand. She needs an adjustment.

I curl up next to Ever and hold her until we both fall asleep under the night sky we both love to look at.

When I wake up, she’s gone. I know that she has things to do and I have to get ready for the day. It looks like the walk of shame as I pass by the remaining women eating breakfast. They don’t need to know anything. Doesn’t matter, because it’s time to take the bull by the horns and make this my show. This is my heart on the line. I wish I could tell America to standby for an explosive finale, but I know Sal would blow a gasket. He’s going to blow one anyway. I foresee several arguments in my future. Or maybe not. I am still at a loss as to what game he’s playing. Well, Sal, it’s time to play mine.

Chapter Twenty-One

Ever

Ileft him in the barn. He looked so cute, I couldn’t wake him. I needed to get breakfast started and I’m still torn as to what I want in my life.

“Ladies, today we’re going to do something a little different,” Memphis says as he sits at the table.

Some of them look scared.

“Today, three of you get to meet the woman that means the world to me.” I can see Skye fidget. He’s talking about his mom. Momma Bernie wasn’t fond of Skye, even when Skye was nice, or nicer than that night.

“Memphis, do you know which three ladies are going to accompany you?” Carlton asks, cameras on.

“Yes, Desiree, Diana, and Natalie.”

“Wow, I haven’t been on a date yet and fatty over there gets one,” Sasha spits out. Guess she forgot the cameras are on.

“This makes the day better.” Memphis smiles and he looks like the Joker from Batman.

“What?” Sasha asks.

“I’m making three cuts today. Sasha, you’re number one. I’m just not that into you,” he announces. Things move fast as she launches herself at him, pounding on his chest. Crazy, much?

And then she comes at me. I defend myself as she hurls punches at me along with insults.

“He’s so hung up on pussy he’s never had.” Why is he hung up on me?

“Security,” someone calls, and Sasha is hauled off. I thought Lexie and Rachel were bad.

“You okay?” Memphis is looking me up and down, leading me inside where my dad takes over inspecting me.

“I’m okay,” I tell both of them.

“I’m sorry.” Memphis palms my cheek. My emotions are all over the place. What am I to him? Am I just like these other girls? Just a conquest? I want to ask those questions, but I decide to wait.

“I’ll bring you back some tea from Mom’s.” That makes me smile. She makes the best tea.

“Have fun.” I wave him off.

“Ever.” My Dad is giving me a warning. He means well, I know.

“Don’t. I don’t know what I’m feeling. But I have loved him my whole life.”
