“Shane.” Sal greets my Dad.

“Sal.” They have kind of a love-hate relationship. My dad doesn’t move to shake his hand.

“Brick,” my dad says with a nod. I say nothing to Brick, but I do hug Uncle Sal.

“You’re the client, I take it.”

Sal nods. “And my client is Memphis Bradford.”

He pauses for a moment, gauging my reaction. Memphis was my best friend until that night I was struck by the car. I’m suddenly really uncomfortable, so I keep quiet.

“Memphis needs an image cleanse, so to speak. He’s what some would call a . . . ”

“Manwhore,” I finish for him. Even out here we know the reputation of the hometown hero, and yet he will be welcomed home like the long-lost son. Okay, I’m a little bitter. One would be when their best friend never bothered to check on them in the hospital, disappeared, and never kept in contact. I guess I didn’t matter to him. Yes, I’m bitter with the right to be.

“Sure, let’s call it that. He’s been getting in fights, sleeping around.” Sal side-eyes me, “We think our idea of this dating show will change how people look at him. We have twenty women who he will pick from.”

“How is this any different than what’s on TV now? It sounds like a rip-off ofThe Bachelor,” I say. He’s not giving anything different or explaining why he wants to film here.

“Well, Ever, since you asked, I want to film on your dad’s property.”

“My homestead plantation?” my dad asks.

“Yes. We want the girls to have an experience. This won’t be like those other shows. They will have to work for a date with Memphis. We want you to cook for everyone, including the crew. Are you in?”

I want to say ‘no’, but Dad needs this. If this becomes a hit, we’ll be set. I just nod at my dad, letting him know it’s cool. I’m not actually cool with it, but I can fake it till I make it.

“We’ll do it, but we stay on the property.” That’s the only relief, that I can go home.

“Of course. We are having trailers brought in for the crew. Memphis will live in the house. The girls are glamping it. Make your menus, someone will do the shopping for you.”

“Why me?” my dad asks.

“You are family and I know you can cook,” Sal states. Boy, is that a drastic understatement. No one cooks as well as Dad does.

“Thanks, Sal.”

Uncle Sal nods as he and Brick, who never said a word, exit the diner and leave Dad and me alone.

“What do you really think?”

“Well, I think this will be good. This will put you ahead. Am I happy about seeing Memphis? No. But I’ll be okay. But Dad, I think it’s time to let Anne go. I want you to be happy and I don’t think you are. I don’t think you have been for a long time. I understand that this will be hard, you’ve been with her for a long time and I will support you in whatever you decide. It’s time to go home.”

“And you?” He pats my shoulder, taking in everything I just said.

“Someday my dream will come true.” I have to believe that.

Chapter Four

Memphis

Iwipe the sweat off my brow as I pound into the wet pussy underneath me. Sal told me to stay out of trouble and not to go anywhere. I can do that. And the girl behind the counter at this little hole-in-the-wall motel was cute. I couldn’t resist. I didn’t even have to leave the room, she delivered herself to me.

“Oh fuck,” she moans. I never caught her name, not that I cared to ask.

I’m so close when she starts to squeeze my cock, but the door opens, bringing a halt to my shenanigans.

“What the hell, man?” Brick looks pretty pissed. Maybe because it’s his bed I’m fucking this girl on.
