“Spit it out asshole. Oh, glad you’re okay.”
“I threw the match to make you look good. That was my favor to you. We’ve been friends for a long time and I’ve never known you to be that cruel.”
“I messed up.” I sigh as I slump into a seat.
“You think? And after all that, that girl never raised her voice. She even wished her tormenter well. And you took her virginity? What the hell, Memphis? Who are you?”
“A manwhore,” I mumble. It’s true, guess I should own it.
“Sure, you’ve fucked around, but you’ve always been a gentleman about it.”
“I don’t think so.”
“I know Sasha and Rachel, and even after the show and their little outbursts, they still speak highly of you. You never broadcasted that you sleep around, people just assume because of the papers. But Ever put it out there, and I get her point. And she’s right, you could have paid for her bills. You caused all of it.”
“You’re right. But how do I fix it?”
“Not sure, but you’re smart, you’ll come up with something.”
I’ve just fucked my life up more and the one person I need, hates me.
Chapter Twenty-Seven
Ever
The ride home is silent. Everyone tried to talk to me, but I made it clear not to say anything to me about what happened. I know my dad is pissed as well. But he’s mad for my benefit, I think he knew about Memphis and Skye. I’m not mad at him, he is just protecting me.
The mood is somber as we all file out of the car, heading toward the house. And I’m not sure what’s going to happen with the show and my dad being paid.
“Ever.” My dad grabs my hand.
“Dad, I don’t . . . ”
“I need you to listen to me for a minute. I knew that Skye had been driving the car. Or I assumed from rumors.” Just confirmed my suspicions.
“And you didn’t go to the sheriff?”
“I knew what you would say. We wanted justice, but if you knew it was Skye, you would have said to keep it quiet. And that was because of Memphis.”
“But he could have . . . ”
“Yes, he could have made it right. But we did alright.” He tucks a stray hair behind my ear.
“I . . . ”
“You’re angry, hurt. We all get that. I’m angry, too. But you have a good heart and maybe it needs a rest.”
“Maybe. I thought he loved me. I was stupid.”
“No, you’re not stupid. It’s your first heartbreak all over again. And it’s a doozy.” He pulls me into a hug.
“I don’t think I can stay here if the show is still being filmed.”
“You don’t have to. You can go to the other house. It’s still for sale.”
“And Anne?”
“She’s still there, but she won’t mind.”
